Everyone said texting would be the downfall of western civilization
They were right.
You're blaming this all on the texting generation.
Who's responsible, those that were improperly educated or those who improperly educated?
Our 'culture' a lot of the time can best be described as ADD. That's truly a sad statement. Being a college student, i find it increadibly sad some of the students who are admitted into college. They've really lowered their standards for admission to keep up with the times.
Re: Pepsi altering course for dumbed down public
MTN is an abbreviation for the word mountain. It's even recognized by USPS. They're simply refocusing the brand onto the name Dew, which is what Mountain Dew was generally referred to as anyway. The adoption of lowercase lettering is just a stylistic choice. It's something a lot of companies have adopted over the last decade. It's more appealing looking to some. I think the fact that many people IM or text in all lowercase is merely a (convenient) coincidence. I also think more is being made out of the Pepsi emoticons (for lack of a better description right now) than needs to be. From what I've seen of the new designs that are coming out, I like them. It's actually rather minimalist and classy. As was said, I think Pepsi rebranding itself to embrace a constantly changing culture is simply good business. I don't think it's their intention to insult anyone's intelligence. I also think boycotting the brand over a packaging change is ... a bit much. As someone who only occasionally drinks diet soda, and then usually just as a mixer for other drinks, I think if the change in Pepsi's marketing is that offensive as it reflects the current culture, the culture itself should reflect on why exactly it drinks so much of this crap in the first place. Maybe if we all stopped drinking soda we'd be better off in the first place, rather than worry about how they abbreviate their brand names.

Re: Pepsi altering course for dumbed down public
I'm not a fan of Pepsi in the first place but it is a bit of a blow to myself as well. I think some people are missing the point, it isn't just because Pepsi is choosing a more "modern" approach to their style it is because Pepsi is in effect "marketing down" (intellectually) to their perceived potential customers. It comes off a bit like being belittled and is annoying.
James may sound like he is making a big deal out of nothing but he really isn't. Once a door is opened it is hard to close. It's kind of like the Hardee's commercials that make it look like we guys are too fucking dumb to open a can of biscuits. Many people are "molded" by what they are being fed, sad but very true. So if they see sitcoms, advertisements etc etc demonstrating the "dumb man" persona (or whatever) it becomes a type of association/assimilation issue with them. "Dumbing down" is the last thing we need. What's next...a warning sticker on your .357 magnum that says "holding loaded gun to head and pulling trigger may cause death?"

When I first saw some of those commercials I was offended by how stupid they implied someone like me (single, in my late 20's at the time) was.
When I saw that particular one, I thought, "Ok, I've done that".
Although they've been implying that in commercials forever. How long have Dad's been to stupid to boil water for Macoroni and cheese when Mom's not home so the kids get to have McDonalds.
On subject though, I'm really curious what the texting generation really thinks of these changes. I would assume Pepsi (I guess "pepsi" now) had some sort of focus groups that made them decide to change things. I think it's kinda dumb, but I'm old and crotchety and think texting is tedious, don't really like emoticons, and use very little internet/texting shorthand.
I also don't drink near the amount of pop that I did 15 years ago when I was the age that they're targetting, so they probably know what they're doing. The same way that plastic bottles got more streamlined and added more colors, or at least changed the pepsi logo slightly when I was that age.

They're insulting my intelligence. I know how to say Mountain Dew, and I know how to spell it. I also know where its located in the store, and know it when I see it. I don't need the products I purchase to be dumbed down in order for me to buy them.
There's no such word as mtn. Scratch that. There is now. I shudder at the thought of a dictionary in 10-20 years, and I truly feel sorry for the youth of today. They don't even have a chance. We're already way behind other countries in education, and we're flying head first into the abyss.
They're already doing it.
Then my boycott officially begins.

I agree James this is stupid. I text but I know that there's a difference between the "wrds" I use to text and the words I use everyday in classes and in the real world.
Doesn't bother me much besides that anyway. All i drink is Doctor(Dr.) Pepper. Never liked any Pepsi product much besides Mountain Dew which tastes like Vault to me.
Vault tastes more to me like 'Surge' from back in the day.
