Re: 2012
Well, figured I'd start a thread for this now. I have a feeling it's going to be the new "Y2K". I saw History Channel has a show about it Sunday night regarding it & Nostradamus (Though I think Nostradamus is a marketing schtick that people bring up every couple years to add legitimacy to their story. His writings never make sense or relate the the real event, just a fraud interpretation).
Anyway, I think we're all going to begin hearing alot more about this date (something like 11/21/2012), it supposedly has something to do with the Mayan Calander. Some crazy people believe it's going to be a big day, aliens may come, judgement day, whatever. I used the search tool here & interestingly enough when Bach spoke about CD he said Axl told him something like the final installment of CD would be released in "2012" (seemed like he was paraphrasing, not speaking verbatim). Still, I wonder if Axl could be caught up in all this. There was an All-Star catcher for the Phillies in the early 90's (Darren Daulton) who's all messed up in this stuff. I think it may have been the coke, but he was on the Sportsnet channel here once during the Phillies season & kept wanting to talk about 2012 during a sports show on live TV. I heard other players asked about it & they just said 'Yeah, it's ashame but he's pretty into that stuff."
Anyone else have any input or know the ins & outs of this year & date? Any stories. I really think the media is about to begin hyping this up.
Re: 2012
It's the end of an astronomical cycle. On that date the earth and the sun lines up directly to the galactic center. We'll be going from the age of Aquarius to the age of Pisces (or the other way around, my memory is a little hazy).
It all dates back to the Mayans who were heavily into astronomy and the cycles of the stars. Their calender ends on this date so that's where all the theories about judgment day etc. comes from.
Nobody really knows, but there is reason to believe that the special line up with the earth, sun and milky way will cause a lot of energy to be released/redirected, which may in turn result in global cataclysms and even a pole shift. This happens to "clean up" in the Universe as to foster new growth and get rid of dead weight.
If you date this cycle back to the last time it happened you end up around 10000 BC which corresponds with what the bible calls the flood/deluge.
Who knows, but it's definitely interesting and the event itself is definitely real, we just don't know what it will do, if anything. As opposed to Y2K which was an entirely man made event.
Re: 2012
I don't see why the earth and Sun being in a specific position in the galaxy would cause the end of the world. The solar system has been orbiting through the galaxy since its birth. What else is it supposed to do, stand still? Everything else in the galaxy reaches that same point as well. As I type this, something else occupies that vicinity. Does a doomsday happen continuously throughout the galaxy for systems that 'line up' with the galactic center? If so, God was incompetent when creating the universe. He should start over.
I do agree that these sorts of topics are interesting, but I just don't believe much of it. Its like a psychic hotline.......for entertainment purposes only. Instead of going after cosmic fairy tales, they should be watching the Oort Cloud and see if they can figure out what keeps going through its orbit every so many millions of years, or that star(forgot its name) that is overdue for a supernovae and its a little too close for comfort, or figure out why Venus seems to give its crust a rebirth so often.
Those are more pressing astronomical issues than Egyptian fairy tales.

Mayan james, Mayan. Get your societies straight!
But If a reversal of the magnetic poles did happen all kinds of shit could happen. For one the currents of the ocean would reverse causing HUGE climate change. also everything running on anything relating to magnatized stuff would mafunction.
Re: 2012
it's all bullshit,if everything is destroyed then what would it matter,it's not like there's anything anyone can do about it.
Re: 2012
Winter Solstice, the arrival of the 13th Baktun. Anyone with even cursory knowledge of the Mayan civilization would know their calendar system was highly advanced, even moreso when considering the astronomical technology at their disposal.
I might be at the Yucatan that Christmas, so I'll see you there.

Re: 2012
The Mayan civilization is one of the most impressive that have ever been and their acheivements with the tools they had to work with (as sic has already said) is extremely impressive. Even so I will lose no sleep in 2012 based on these sort of predictions. This is an instance where sensationalism has outweighed sensibility.
Re: 2012
Well the Mayan did predict the exact date on their calender when the white man would invade their lives and it came to be true. It's interesting to me as I think there is a lot about our world that is forgotten or hidden from us. I think something will happen but I'm not leaning towards total destruction.
