Re: Brendan O'Brien Ventures Into Metal
his health... he has SEVERE back problems
and probably name recognition...i'm already scared about what the new mastodon record is gonna sound like.... but if y'all remember, that's why zakk wylde hired Michael Beinhorn. Roadrunner wanted him to get a "name" producer, even though he had produced all the previous BLS records. the killswitch guys prolly heard he was doing the mastodon record and figured "why not"...
these bands are on the cusp of something, and their labels are prolly pushing them to appeal to a wider audience. B O' B has a mainstream track record...that's why i give huge props to lamb of god, who, after their last record sort of went for the full on pantera tribute, are apparently not giving a shit who RR wants to produce their record, and went with Josh Wilbur.... the guy who engineered the drums and guitars on sacrament and a guy i went to high school with in maine...
Yeah, I was wondering why the hell he's been using a Parker for the past year-ish, but I guess it's because it's because of his back, the Parker being so light and all. I think Beinhorn may have been more up their alley than O'Brien tho.

Re: Brendan O'Brien Ventures Into Metal
I lost faith in Brendan O'Brien after helped produce Libertad. He is responsible for Dave's fart sounding guitar tones ruining whatever enjoyment I might have gotten from that CD.
Re: Brendan O'Brien Ventures Into Metal
While I like BOB's records, think he did a great job with stp, PJ & many others, I think he worked on alot of the RHCP too. I think the last Audioslave was too polished & overproduced. & Libertad was a huge blunder. It needed a more raw sound (early 90's grunge vibe) to fit the band, instead he made some polished shit & I think has alot to do with it's disappointment. (Not putting all the blame on him, but some).
I also never heard of this band. But as to why they're finally using an outside producer, probably the record company told them too, as they want to push them into the mainstream & get a few hits written & sell more records. Myb even they want to, finally make some good coin.
EDIT: Just listened to a few of their stuff on Rhapsody. Not my cup of tea. Makes Libertad sound like Led Zeppelin IV.

Re: Brendan O'Brien Ventures Into Metal
Can't say I like Brendan O'Brien. I hated Libertad's production and none of the Stone Temple Pilots stuff ever sounds particularly well produced to me. Ok at best.
Re: Brendan O'Brien Ventures Into Metal
If y'all haven't heard the new Mastodon record produced by Mr. O' Brien yet.... you need to.
I'm a long time mastodon nut.... and i must admit.. i was more than a little worried about the idea of BOB producing this thing....and i'm not gonna lie... i was even more sketched out after i listened to it the first time... but mark my words... buy the deluxe version with the instrumental versions... oh. my. fucking. god.....if the chorus to "oblivion" doesn't suck you in... you have no SOUL... lol
Turn the lights off... grab an ashtray.. throw on the good headphones and immerse yourself in this record.. then spark up another and listen to the record again without vocals... a masterpiece. 9/10... great job by BOB....
