Raises hand. I'm not much of a stickler when it comes to the comics, but there are several things I don't think should be fucked with. One is you don't kill the Joker. Burton did it, dammit. Two is you don't make the Joker the same person who killed Batman's parents. That completely fucks up the relationship between the two and it even dilutes the nature of Batman's mission, which is supposed to be about fighting crime in general (since he doesn't really know who the killer is in the comics) rather than getting revenge on one person who just so happens to also be a supervillain. What Nolan did to the visuals of the Joker is considered blasphemy by a lot of people, but for some reason I actually like it better than the comics. It has a very cinematic quality to it. Like if that was drawn in a comic book, I probably wouldn't like it as much as the traditional version of the Joker in the comics. But in a movie it looks amazing.

I agree 1000% with this. I love the 89 movie for other reasons - like the set design and stuff...but the story line was intollerable!

I also prefer Nolan's Joker as a psychopath who wears 'war paint', rather than Burton's toxic chemical scarred-Joker.

Burton's is more accurate to the comic books, but I think once people actually saw Nolan and Ledger's work in the film (not just Ledger's performance but also the excellent writing for the character), many have agreed that it's actually BETTER than the Joker ever was in the comics, which is pretty fucking amazing that they were able to top the previous version of the character that has been around for so many decades while still maintaining the essence of the character. I definitely think Nolan/Ledger's Joker is better than the comic book version has ever been, and I don't say that lightly. I have a lot of respect for the various great versions of the character in the comics. Burton's adaptation of the character was pretty accurate except for the two major things I mentioned (killing him off and making him the killer of Batman's parents). There's something about making the Joker just show up and be a nutjob in facepaint that is far more intense for the viewer than seeing someone turned into a nutjob by toxic chemicals. The idea of him carving those scars in his face gives the viewer a little insight into just how fucked up in the head he really is...and the fact that you don't know why he's fucked up makes it all the more intriguing. And the other thing that makes it intriguing to watch is that, quite frankly, a lot of the philosophical shit that he says is probably true. You know how crazy he is, but at the same time he makes a hell of a lot of sense too. I think he's right. When the chips are down, these civilized people WILL eat each other. Hell, it's happened before! Donner Party anyone? 16

I think that's so eerie about Nolan/Ledger's Joker. They borrowed some of the "we're both freaks, don't you see?" logic, that was presented in Burton/Nicholson's Joker.

But it works, and even more so now. The Joker is a philosophist in a way, sitting back MAKING Batman/Bruce Wayne doubt his stance for what he's doing. When the chips are down, these civilized people will eat each other. Will you live long enough to see yourself become the villian. At the end of the day, me and you are the same, they all just look at us as freaks.

That shit was amazing. And Ledger & Bale played it perfectly, considering the fact that Bale is borrowing alot of that Michael Keaton, borderline-psychotic Batman aura.

That stuff also makes you question your own life. I've seen it before myself. Somebody who's completely honest and true... give it enough time... they become the villian, for all the wrong reasons.

I think someone on the board mentioned it to me recently... "most likely they'll hate you for pointing out their life is so shitty".
