yeah I get what people mean by going out on a high. And it makes sence to me in terms of like looking at their overall legacy kinda thing, i'm just saying if you consider that celbs are real people living lives with families and all that...then it's not really a nice thing.

I remember an interview with Axl many years ago where he said something about not wanting to sacrifice himself on the alter of rock and roll. And i think it holds true in his case - some would like it if he'd died back on the UYI tour - you'd have GNR at their highpoint of publicity - no breakup of the old band, no 15 year wait, no change of clothing style and all that, no reclusive behaviour. The media would have elevated him to perminant rock god status. But then you have to consider axl is a real dude...and why should he have to die so the media can play games like that, not to mention that he's made some great music since then that we would have missed.

Yeah, I don't want to go there, but imagine if Hendrix lived & Clapton died. Would Clapton be more of an icon? Instead of Morrison would Robert Plant have been known as the poet?? If Axl died in 92/93 & Cobain lived (although I still think Cobain would be known for "exploding grunge", even if he lived) or if Staley lived & Vedder died, instead of Hoon, Billy Corgan. Instead of Brad Nowell, Billy Joe Armstrong.

Again, sorry to bring those living into this, but yeah, would be a pretty surreal thing to see the world in the opposite parrellel.

LOL, I don't think the Plant/Morrison comparison is a very good one. Plant is already a bigger rock god than Morrison ever could be even with Morrison dying at a young age. Hendrix and Clapton were on a similar level at the time though so that is a pretty good comparison.
