Re: The BATMAN Thread
Something had to be amiss.
I couldn't imagine Nolan, who keeps top-tier talent for his Batman films, would go for a non-serious comedian for The Riddler.
The only person I could imagine playing The Riddler is Johnny Depp.
Plus, Nolan & Goyer haven't even started penning a third film, so who knows if The Riddler will even be involved.
With Batman Begins, Nolan chose a pretty obscure villian from the classic comics, in the form of The Scarecrow. TDK was when they went for the classic Batman villian, with The Joker & Harvey Two-Face. Maybe Begins 3 will feature another obscure Batman villian like The Mad Hatter or something.
Another factor I think Nolan is probably considering, is trying NOT to chose overly campy villians. The Joker was a leap of faith, that depended all on Ledger's performance, which Ledger nailed in the darkest manner possible. Without going Jack Nicholson's route of just redoing Cesar Romero's take on the role.
The Riddler could be a good option IF it's portrayed in a dark sense, ala TDK's Joker. Mr. Freeze could be a good option, IF he is portrayed as the tragic character he was in Batman: The Animated Series, and not the laughing joke that Schwarzenegger was in Batman & Robin. Same goes for Poison Ivy.
I personally don't want to see any Catwoman, and certaintly not Batgirl. If they go with a chick, a darker performance of Poison Ivy is about all i'd sign off on. And the character would be reinvented like The Joker. Take Ivy and turn her into a environmental terrorist, and away from the campy seductress that'd make you sniff a rose and then tie up with vines. Fuck that shit.
Re: The BATMAN Thread
Then I don't understand what you want out of an actor.
I will agree, that I haven't yet seen that massively emotion-driven Depp performance yet. I'd love to see Depp in a totally serious, emotion-driven role. He's supposed to be in an upcoming Michael Mann film, which could be very interesting.
21 Jump Street was Depp doing the straight-forward cop show, and his films showed more range, but typically the comedies are just borderline-psychotic performances, with Depp taking on thrillers the same way.
I don't think he's overrated, I just don't think he's signed off quite yet on the film that's going to push him over the top.

Pretty much. So many of his "stellar" performances he's benifited from makeup and costume. Anyone could do what he does in some of those movies cause he's so done up it's not even him. I wanna see him do some real acting again. Stuff like Blow and Donnie Brasco now those were good.
Tom Cruise would be good cause I just picture the Riddler being this smooth talking guy who got a crazy grin. I don't I just think he could do it. Also Ewan McGegor just has a real charming apeal to him though I'm not sure he could pull off the psychotic part. Tom Cruise proved to me in Collateral that he can play roles not expecetd of him. I think he'd be a great Riddler. He's the type of actor that can go from likeable and suave to creepy and psychotic with the snap of a finger. Never gonna happen though and I'm well aware I'm in the huge minority in thinking this.
Re: The BATMAN Thread
I think the biggest mistake they can make is taking influence from Heath's Joker in any future villians.
If they go with the Riddler, i'd like it to be mainly just a voice over. Make the Riddler a Zodiac type character and pretty much never show him through the whole film. Johnny Depp could do a wonderful voice for that character i think. He'd bring that psychotic-narcisism that the Riddler needs.
As far as other villians, Mr Freeze would work good if they made him a victimized character like you said Axlin. I just don't want to see any 'cartoony' villians.

Blow is sorely underrated. I saw it the other day in the Wal-Mart bargain bin for $5 bucks. And even though it got good reviews, I really think it's a modern-classic, that doesn't get the respect it deserves.
And Donnie Brasco... shit... I forgot about that one. Damn fine movie. I think i've got it on DVD lying around here somewhere, still in shrink-wrap.
Tom Cruise was the most overrated actor on the planet, and his movies sucked. Seriously, I piss people off reguarly with this, but his movies SUCKED. Risky Business - sucked. Top Gun - gay. Days of Thunder - lame. Jerry Maguire - waste of time. Eyes Wide Shut - suicide-inducing.
Then along came a little movie called.... The Last Samurai. The plot was fucking dumb when I read it. I thought this has GOT to be the worst ever. I saw it one day (at work of all places, during a 'down' time). Watched it, and was amazed. It was terrific. And Cruise was great. Totally turned me around with the guy.
Then a year later - Collateral. He was warmed up with Samurai, and Collateral came out, and as far as i'm concerned - his finest hour. His best performance ever. I think Michael Mann brought that out of him. He has a way of doing that with actors, because he's such a remarkable director. I think Last of the Mohicans is Daniel Day-Lewis & Madeline Stowe's best. I think Heat is Pacino & DeNiro's finest work, and definitely for lesser guys like Kilmer & Sizemore. Ali showed the world that Will Smith was an amazing actor, and not just some former rapper eye candy for lame flicks like ID4 & The Wild Wild West.
I'm very anxious to see what Mann will bring out of Depp. It could be career-defining. He's plays John Dillinger in the upcoming film "Public Enemies" based in the 1930s on following the gangsters, Dillinger, Baby Face Nelson & Pretty Boy Floyd.

Re: The BATMAN Thread
For some reason I still think Tom Cruise would be a wicked Riddler. I could also see someone like Ewan McGregor playing the Riddler
Ewan McGregore would be a good choice. Tom Cruise would be an awful choice. I think James Spader would be a good one. He's intelligent and arrogant as hell, just like the Riddler.

The other good thing is Christian Bale is in Public Enemies with Depp. Maybe he can convince Depp to sign on to Batman 3.
As for Blow, it's a great movie. Depp was brilliant in it. Donnie Brasco is also a great one as well. I think Tom Cruise would be an awful choice for the Batman franchise. Too much baggage.

I knew i would get flack from saying it...just a coupld mannerisms that ledger used in the role, some of the vocal inflections, i'm no where saying that jack invented the joker. hell i watched the adam west batman every saturday when i was a kid..i've watched the cartoons over the years and i've read some of the comics...i know the story, i still think that ledger drew inspiration from jack
Sorry, a little late here, but I'm not trying to shoot you down man. Ledger completely transformed for this role. Nicholson did what he did best. He played himself. See, it's in my opinion that ol' Jack, like Nicholas Cage, plays the same role in every movie he's in. Not shitting on him or anything, but he just has that placable character. In all of the original comic writer's opinions, Ledger's portrayal of the Joker was the closest in any movie form. The all time closest was Mark Hammil's version in the animated series.
Another thing that bothers me is Johnny Depp in the role as The Riddler. This could very much be hit or miss. He's awesome in some roles, but fucking terrible in others. He played Hunter S. Thompson in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas', witch I fucking loved, but then just basically recycled that character for the Pirates movies. Ooooh... if he plays his creepy ass Willy Wonka in the next Batman, that'd work!

Mark Hamill did a voice and a laugh. That's it. Ledger had to incorporate his own eye, facial, and hand mannerisms into his performance as well as nailing the voice and laugh. I love the Animated Series Joker, but it has just as much to do with the writers of that show as it does the voice actors portraying those characters. I personally think Batman: The Animated Series is the best cartoon ever and it's mainly because of the writing, although Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill definitely created the best Batman and Joker voices ever. In the case of a live action film, the script needs to be excellent but you need an actor who can add his own spin on things. Nolan has mentioned that a vast majority of the Joker's physical movements (eye rolling, tongue wagging, hand gestures, etc.) were Ledger's ideas, not things already in the script.
