Re: GNR band member intelligence
I had a discussion with my wife about GNR members intelligence, and I think we both agreed on a few of them.
We didn't put any specifics of which we judged from, but we put different keywords in, like social skills, artistic skills, behavior skills, rethorics or written language..so here goes our top list of GNR brainiacs!
1. Ron Thal
Definetely the smartest guy GNR ever had. Great with communication, a guitar teacher and very well behaved all around. GNR academic.
2. Duff McKagan
Sort of grew and grew. From a dazed alchoholic in the early 90's to a college degree man who writes for newspapers. Nothing short of amazing climb.
3. Axl Rose
We both agreed he scored very low on some points, but when it comes to an artistic mind, writing and expressions put on paper, he's the king. He's too smart for his own good, and gets lost in it.
4. Robin Finck
I have always expected there is a very smart man inside Robin, and you can tell from his artistical sides. However, he was never good in straight communication.
5. Brain
Fifth place is a tad harder and could be basically many of them; Tommy Stinson, Izzy Stradlin, Slash or someone else, I pick Brain.
Special notice:
Buckethead. Absolutely no way of knowing anything about him!

I think Slash should be in the Top-5. He has a great business model too, and a great relationship with the fans. Even in 2010, alot of Axlites of loosened up to him.
The dumbest guys ever in Guns N' Roses, collectively tying for the bottom would have to be Tracii Guns, Ole Beich and Rob Gardner. 
I agree with Ron Thal, Duff McKagen and Axl Rose being the Top-3 and in that order in 2010.
20 years ago, Axl would've been #1 imo.

Yeah, Axl would have been reigning supreme in 1990, just because of drug abuse alone by the others. I never really knew enough about Izzy to know how smart he fared. My wife considers DJ Ashba a lot smarter than I did, as I saw some of those comments he did on Facebook a while back and thought they were dumb as fuck, but the dude knows how to do business.
Tracii Guns and Adler must be one of the lowest scorers. I never thought Matt Sorum was too smart either.

I think on raw intelligence Axl is the smartest. He also has some personality issues that makes him seem like he isn't, but that's not lack of smarts - it's that his emotions over rule it. But on raw brains I think Axl operates on a deeper thinking and analysis level than you'd expecrt.
I'd call it like this:
Analysis and Emotional Depth = Axl. (wins on raw thoughts and brains)
School smarts = Duff (most balanced, will do his time to learn)
Street Smarts = Slash. (May not win an IQ test but he knows how to kick ass in anything he wants to be best at)

I didn't say IQ, and I don't think they actually are more intelligent than average. They might have a headstart in artistical sides, and some of them might be natural born (like Axl) but I'm not giving them any more credit than what I see. Being good with the fans has something to do with intelligence because it clearly shows you have a social skill other may have not to the same level.
