Just now listened to the track. Its definitely different, which I embrace 100000%. She's taking chances and pushing herself creatively. If this song is an indicator of the direction she's going with the album, she's got some rage pent up and is going to express it.
The lyrical tone of the song reminds me a bit of where she was going with Bird Flu. Not comparing it musically to that as they're apples and oranges.
I am REALLY looking forward to the album more than before, which is almost impossible. 
I'm wondering if this is really the first single, or is it like with Bird Flu where she just leaks it to give people a taste of the coming scrumptious feast.
Diplo and others who described the record were spot on. She's broadening her horizons and is NOT going to be pigeonholed into a genre, which is one of the things I've always loved about her.
She just hit us over the head with another sledgehammer. Kudos to M.I.A. The three year wait for this album was worth it. 
Russ, saikin, madagas, Bri, and other casual fans here, definitely download the track. Its not her best song, but gives us a good indication of where she's going and its definitely a departure from kala.

Holy shit! Did you see the video for this? Provocative, compelling, interesting, thought-provoking, grisly. I like it and the song. This is the kind of stuff I like to see artists doing. I won't mention those of immense talent who I think play it safe all the time. Gotta do different things to keep people on their toes.

Yeah she's taking things to a new level. The U.S. is trying to censor it, and it keeps getting removed from youtube. She had to put it on her own site...

MIA released her new video for 'Born Free' on her website Monday, and it's not easy to watch. The video shows U.S. soldiers rounding up redheaded men and boys and bussing them to the desert where they are brutally beaten and killed. Whether it's a comment on the absurdity of genocide (of which MIA saw plenty during her early childhood in Sri Lanka) or a challenge to the idea of "other" in U.S. immigration policy, it is startling even in the context of recent genre-bending music art-films.
The Romain Gavras-directed short is so gruesome (or political) that YouTube pulled it from airing in the U.S., and MIA took to Twitter to rail against her record label, Universal Music Group.
"FUCK UMG WHO WONT SHOW IT ON YOUTUBE! FOR THE U.S >>>>>>WATCH HERE http://miauk.com/" she tweeted. Later she wrote, "OK NOT UMG FAULT!"
MIA also took over Pitchfork's Twitter feed Monday afternoon, where she tweeted vaguely political statements such as, "i got digital cash Hactivism at its best Google Bombing with my Infotainment"
