Re: "Best Album Ever" fan compilations
Mikka with his Slash list in that specific section and the heat he's taking for it made me think about starting a thread to see what others(including myself) would do with compiling an assortment of tracks from your favorite artists/bands that you feel might be deserving of such a label.
Of course, I'll go first with the obvious....
Soundgarden
Hands All Over
Nothing To Say
Big Dumb Sex
Jesus Christ Pose
Slaves and Bulldozers
Room A Thousand Years Wide
Fell On Black Days
Superunknown
Head Down
Fresh Tendrils
Mailman
Overfloater
Never the Machine Forever
An Unkind
Switch Opens
Boot Camp
That was hard.
Fleetwood Mac
The Chain
You Make Loving Fun
Second Hand News
Never Going Back Again
Gold Dust Woman
Go Your Own Way
Gypsy
Tusk
Big Love
Seven Wonders
Hold Me
As Long As You Follow
Beatles
Get Back
Yesterday
Day Tripper
The Ballad of John and Yoko
Come Together
Revolution 1
With a Little Help From My Friends
Helter Skelter
Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except Me & My Monkey
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Not a massive Beatles fan, but that's a pretty damn good list for someone not enthralled by their entire discography.
Eagles
One of these Nights
Hotel California
Those Shoes
Take It To The Limit
In The City
King of Hollywood
I Can't Tell You Why
Peaceful Easy Feeling
Witchy Woman
Take It Easy
Best of My Love
Lyin Eyes
I'll do a Floyd list later.

Re: "Best Album Ever" fan compilations
My problem with this is that, first of all, with bands that I truly love, I tend to actually think an album or two of theirs is perfect. Like, personally, with Blind Melon - the only way I could improve either their self titled or Soup would be to add the other album on top of it. So I can't really do that.
Then with Faith No More, they went through so many different sounds, not to mention players, that I'm not sure I could build anything cohesive out of it. And if we're reaching for best ever, flow has to be considered.
And of course, those with too little material (Bungle or Jane's Addiction) or too much to pick from (NIN).
I'll try to make one later, but it'll only upset me, haha.
Re: "Best Album Ever" fan compilations
I'd love to work for a record company and come up with best of compilations. Are we doing real life cd's with a certain cd time limit? And what is the time limit for a cd? Some bands deserve a 2cd greatest songs & some bands can perfectly fill one. Let's make some guidelines here.

If you want to take time into consideration, you certainly can. Probably a wise move as 2 hours of music obviously wont fit on one album. However, while compiling mine, I wasn't gonna add up the length of each song that I picked. The only one on my list that may go over the time limit is that Soundgarden list.

Okay, this wouldn't be the "best album ever", so it's basically a "Best of" for STP.
Dead and Bloated
Down
Hollywood Bitch
Heaven and Hot Rods
Vasoline
Plush
Wonderful
Trippin'
Wicked Garden
Interstate Love Song
Sour Girl
Sex Type Thing
Crackerman
No Way Out
