I know it sounds like alot of times I/we talk like a bunch of grumpy old men in these polls & eliminations, about the good ole' days, and how I know best about what was then. Voting for "what was better IN the 80's," rather than "what is better NOW while reflecting on the 80's"
But I thought of an analogy. Imagine in 20 years you're taking a poll, about "What was the greatest website of the 2000's...?" You would think 'Google' or course. Or possibly Youtube. But imagine if 20 years later they didn't fare too well, and became obsolete. Yet a relatively small site like Linked In, or Hulu.com became ingenious... 20 years from now you might think "No way!! Google was WAYYY more important to the 2000's than those sites." But, 20 years from now, people who didn't experience the phenomenon of Google or Youtube might not realize the relevance of it. I didn't own many of the finals 80s tapes (I owned more of the second round tapes than first round. I guess I had bad taste in music 
), nor was I a truely big fan of any that I wanted it & only it to win. But that's why sometimes I & myb others vote for things like Slippery When Wet, it's just also the impact it had as you look back on life. And Livin on a Prayer is a pretty catchy singalong tune too.

Different people reflect on different things.
The media sculpts Disco as defining the 70's. Yet i've met many people that say those songs weren't even listened to all that much outside of "the scene". Those same people get pissed because they remember Pink Floyd, The Stones, Led Zeppelin, as well as the many successful R&B/Soul artists of the time being the major influence.
Itt all depends on the person.
Michael Jackson was a fucking superstar in the 1980's, but if you ask a metalhead, they'll reflect on Priest & Dio, and won't even mention Jackson.

I remember the 70's being about punk and politics that kicked your butt in real life, with the cold war and the 3 day week here in the UK - no power and no sugar, no reliable consumer basics, bodies of the dead being stored in refrigererated vans etc because there was nowhere else to put them, and the consequent trauma for their families.
the 80's and 90's gave us so much, I think life is progressively better for most people (cf former Soviet nations, although they have fallen back into tribal warfare) but yeah, history as lived is subjective, as acknowledged in books and study, doubly so - the victors usually get to write the history we inherit as factual.
