Opeth - Ghost Reveries (2005)
I listened to Opeth - Ghost Reveries today...several people have told me good things about this band...including a similarity to TooL. i've been meanign to pick this up for a couple years but i always have denied they urge to buy it....after finally getting it i was pleasantly surprised at what i heard
First off the vocalist has always put me off, from the little i've heard of Opeth, he's got a very gutteral, cookie monster type style that he uses on and off through the material....that being said, upon getting into the album itself it doesnt really intrude too much into the whole musical journey that this album offers. some of the melodies on the album are mesmerizing and over all i think a fan of metal should give this disk a spin, the music itself is pretty bad ass all around. it swings from some melodic progressive rock, to an orchestrated peice to straight up metal and back again, and i doubt anywhere else will you have a piano peice with cookie monster vocals and the making it all work very well.
I did a bit of research on the band and album, the band influences as cited by wikipedia are Slayer, Death, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, King Diamond and Morbid Angel as well as prgressive rock and some folk music, the singers name is Mikael Åkerfeldt and he has a huge impact on composition of the material. The vocal switches that he incorporates are pretty amazing, i have no idea how he sings like that, its actually pretty impressive to reach that low guttaral voice then swing up to a maynard type voice. The album itself aparently had a single, ,track 7, The Grand Conjuration, but i would recommend that you listen to the entire album instead of singles for this band...it was quite a ride to listen to the album unfold....going back later and reading aparently this album is a cancept album about a story of a man's turmoil after killing his own mother....crazy death metal swedes
I'd prolly rank this album 7 Les Pauls outta 10
Re: Neemo's Two Cents
Interesting review, Neemo. I have their second album Morningrise and the death metal vocals are there as well. Track #5 has all clean vocals. I don't listen to it as much as I should because the songs all average around 10 minutes long including a 20 minute epic "Black Rose Immortal." This album I think is a concept album and deals with a man whose wife is dying with cancer.
I think their later albums don't feature as much death metal growls as much as the earlier albums.
I have another one of their albums on mp3 and will check that out as well.
