Re: Obama to decide how much you smoke
the ones addicted most likely will still smoke, what it will do is decrease the amount of smoking that yout will see on TV and in mag ads and billboards, sporting events etc etc ... reduce the "cool" factor
That doesn't work. We tried that in the 90s.
Also, why not reduce the cool factor of drinking which kills thousands of teens/college age people every year due to overdose or car crashes?
Because its not an easy target and doesn't suit their agenda.
we actually ahve some doctors here that will not take you on as a patient if you are a smoker, they will make you go to the clinic instead
That's a utopian fantasy I want no part of, and the sooner this clown gets removed from office, the better.
Re: Obama to decide how much you smoke
in ontario they have just imposed way stricter dui charges
Drivers caught with a blood/alcohol level between .05 and .08 mg will automatically have their licences pulled for three days the first time around.
Caught again within a five year period, and they will be barred from driving for a week and will have to complete an alcohol education program to get the licence back.
A third offence, and the driving ban is for one month, and the driver may have to install an ignition interlock system on their vehicles for six months. All of that, plus the cost of getting a licence reinstated and increased insurance rates.
The suspensions can't be appealed, but they will stick to your driving record.
Some have said the law is too strict, but no one who has been affected by a drunk driving crash would likely agree- and there's a lot of them out there.
Next summer, a law is expected to go into effect that will put a zero blood/alcohol limit on drivers 21 years and younger.
a blood/alcohol level between .05 and .08 mg is like 2 beers

obviously its a bit different here, the gov't pays for alot of our health care and there is a shortage of family doctors, i'm not saying all docs are like that here, but i have heard of it happening

This arguement always bothered me.
Even as a kid I noticed the main difference between most of the people I knew who smoked and those who didn't.
Whether or not your parents smoked.

Because you can't smoke an ugly girl pretty.
Re: Obama to decide how much you smoke
^ tis true, my wife smokes and my kids see her do it and my youngest has actually grabbed one of her smokes and bit the end off (trying to be like mom) and the older one has said "when I get older...."
i;m always on my wifes case to quit, she hates it, i dont push it as far as a should but i wish she'd quit

I always hate the "why not" line of reasoning. Saying they shouldn't do something that at the end of the day will only have positive consequences because they haven't done it to something else is nonsensical.
One of the main differences with alcohol and smoking is it's less addictive. Not saying it's not addictive because alcoholism is a pretty good example that it is but it definetly isn't as addictive as smoking. Would reducing the "cool factor" of drinking be a good idea. Yes. But would reducing the "cool factor" and trying to prevent younger people getting so easily hooked to smoking be a good idea. Yes!
@Neemo: that whole thing of doctors not seeing patients is messed up. Seriously messed up. We banned smoking in public places i.e. bars, restaurants etc here a couple of years back and the number of new smokers and smokers overall has decreased and our NHS board praised it. Doctors over here may not be as eager to help smokers but they would never refuse treatment.
Re: Obama to decide how much you smoke
they dont refuse treatment, but they woudl refuse a new patient, like for a family doctor you have to be accepted as a client so to speak, i've heard of doc turnign away "new patients" if they are smokers and really putting the clamp down on existing patients to quit...i'm not saying that a surgeon will not operate if he finds a pack of smokes rolled in your sleeve or anythign
you cannot smoke in any establishment here, work, bars, restaurants, most places you must leave the property to light up
i find it shitty that for years the gov't spent millions of dollars to get joe public hooked to gain tax dollars off cigarettes, only to turn around and shun the very same people

Well in the past two years if the current party in power (in my case Labour) hadn't pushed to get smoking banned in public they would have been voted out at the next election. Was a vote-getting move. Ironically Labour still lost the election

Why? Because it doesn't fall in line with the agenda? Its a perfect example.
What would you rather do? Smoke cigarettes, or get run over by some dipshit who drank a bottle of tequila because its "cool"?

Why am I not surprised? In the words of Ronald Reagan....
Government isn't the solution. Its the problem.
When these pansies with their fantasies get in there and try to push radical agendas that stifle the economy, they are always surprised when the public votes them out of office.
Re: Obama to decide how much you smoke
Okay, I go over this.
1) As an Obama supporter, this is the first REAL mistake i've seen. This is just flat out stupid. Like others have said, all that'll happens is people will smoke MORE. Strikeout at the plate.
2) This is not the Soviet Union James.
3) Conservatives are not dead, but the Republican party is very dead. They need a total reinvention (Ron Paul) if they are going to get back the White House. Right now - Newt Gingrich & Sarah Palin are the big hopes for 2012. If that's the case, Obama can go ahead and start writing his re-election speech for January 2013. He's got it in the bag.
The GOP are going to have to bring a revolutionary guy to the table to take Obama out, and Reagan Republicans are DEAD. As dead as Reagan. That IS NOT going to get it done, and I say that as a former registered Republican.
