REZNOR Confirms JANE'S ADDICTION Tour Rumors, Says It's Time To Make NIN Disappear For A While - Feb. 16, 2009
NINE INCH NAILS mainman Trent Reznor has posted the following message on the band's official web site:
"Towards the beginning of my career in NINE INCH NAILS, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with JANE'S ADDICTION. These performances essentially created and defined the term 'alternative' rock in the U.S., created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for NIRVANA to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend — truly the best times I've had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the 'next level' (whatever that means), but caused JANE'S to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.
"Fast forward to the present. Corporate rock STILL sucks. A friend tells me they saw the original JANE'S lineup play a tiny show in L.A. that was unbelievable. I break out my JANE'S records and am amazed by how vital they sound. These guys were the real deal and in this current climate mostly dominated by poseurs and pussies, it was refreshing to hear something that sounded dangerous, volatile, beautiful and SINCERE.
"E-mails were sent, phone calls were made, dinner was arranged, ideas were discussed and the next thing I know we're in the studio experimenting. We laugh, we get to know each other, we cry, we yell, we almost quit, we record LOTS of guitar solos, we discuss, we actually begin to all communicate, we yell some more, we become FRIENDS, we laugh again and we do some great things. I get to see first-hand why they broke up all those years ago but I also get the chance to see four distinct personalities that become an INCREDIBLE band when they're in the same room.
"In NIN world, 2009 marks the 20th anniversary of our first releases. I've been thinking for some time now it's time to make NIN disappear for a while. Last year's 'Lights in the Sky' tour was something I'm quite proud of and seems like the culmination of what I could pull off in terms of an elaborate production. It was also quite difficult to pull off technically and physically night after night and left us all a bit dazed. After some thought, we decided to book a last run of shows across the globe this year. The approach to these shows is quite different from last year — much more raw, spontaneous and less scripted. Fun for us and a different way for you to see us and wave goodbye. I reached out to JANE'S to see if they'd want to join us across the U.S. and we all felt it could be a great thing. Will it work? Will it resonate in the marketplace? Who knows. Is there big record label marketing dollars to convince you to attend? Nope. Does it feel right to us and does it seem like it will be fun for us and you? Yes it does.
"Look for tour dates soon and I hope to see you out there."

Wow. Now I regret selling my tix last year. Wasn't in the right "mood" to go see them, and figured I could just catch them on the next leg. I really hope they schedule a show in my area. If not, I will always regret not going to that show.
If they're "experimenting" in the studio, could we possibly see an album recorded by a NIN/Jane's Addiction supergroup?

Sounds awfully simliar to Bono's statements in 1989. "we have to go away for awhile and dream it all up again" That new dream turned into Achtung Baby. This coud be a really awesome thing for NIN. Take a break, take a step back and come back swinging.
James I'm sorry to say man but I think missing the Lights in the Sky tour could always be a regret for you. Even if you see them this summer it sounds as though it'll be a stripepd down type of tour. Still very cool but the Lights in the Sky tour was off the charts. The procution is something you most definately shoul've seen.

Trent has been talking like this for a while, but then I also think he sees his youth fading away and his ability to do big arena tours going with it, so he's going down in a blaze of glory. I'm really glad I saw the LITS tour, it's the best tour technically that I've seen. If they come nearby with Jane's, who I also like, I'll go for it unless it gets super expensive.
Stripped down tech could mean wider setlist maybe? Also with Jane's it seems Trent is feeling nostalgia, and while I think his recent efforts are better than PHM the PHM material live is fucking killer. I'd like to see a PHM, Broken, TDS, Fragile heavy show. They've been touring with little stop for 4 years now and all the new stuff has been done a lot. YZ and The Slip have now seen the US, Ghosts-style instrumentals may be the focal point of a mature new-NIN in 2010 or 2011 or whenever, so the old rockers should take the main stage, possibly for the last time.

NIN is going nowhere. Trent is just fuckin' around with words again.
Not sure, that could be the case. I just hope GNR isn't gonna be on standby waiting to find out what Robin's future plans are. I wouldn't expect them to, but you just never know.
I'm not sure what to believe from Trent. Didn't he say a couple weeks ago that NIN were going nowhere they were just scaling back the tour. Now all of a sudden they need to take a break? So who knows what the story will be come summer.

Well towards the end of the YZ tour in Europe Trent said that presenting NIN as a rock show was getting boring, and that it was time to do something different with it (PResumably smaller venues with the show looking like the Ghosts-sections of the LITS tour). American fans lost their minds that NIN's last big arena tour was a European tour, Trent hadn't toured YZ in the US despite it being a concept album about US politics, then he wrote The Slip, another album fit for live arena rock. So he put it together one last time... and now an opportunity to play with Jane's is here.
My opinion is that he thinks he should move on to more "mature" things, but just can't pass up the chance to do a big rock tour. And I'm fine with that.
