Re: Fair Usage Policy (File Sharing ect..)
I'm wondering if anyone here has ever got warned or punished by their Internet Service Provider for downloading... And if anyone can reccomend one with a lenient policy other than "Talk Talk" or "Orange"
This question is particulary for those in the UK.

Re: Fair Usage Policy (File Sharing ect..)
i think most ISP`s are goin down that route now. I guess Talk Talk and Orange are the mobile broadband services, ive not used em, not fast enough and not enough quota 12gig a year!! i`d use that in a day
Personally the ISP i use, which i have no choice in the matter lol, is semi reasonable regarding downloading, tho they have disconnected a few people and reconnected them after they said they wouldnt do it again..tho thats only with illegal Torrents or other P2P where you effectively host the files as well as download em, which is what mine dont like, they dont care what you download as long as you dont act as a server for it.. which is half reason i use newsgroups. fast, anonymous, encrypted and no sharing.
They dont really enforce the quota rule (which is enough anyway) if you go over it, unless you kick the shit out of it day after day for like week(s).
Cant really help you as Im in a monopolised city and have no experience with other ISP`s.
Re: Fair Usage Policy (File Sharing ect..)
"Orange" does home broadband as well, I mentioned them because their the only company I know that basically allows it (File Sharing)... "Talk Talk" used to turn a blind eye to it, about a year ago.
Re: Fair Usage Policy (File Sharing ect..)
Just curious, what do you guys download? I mean, i can understand HD movies but do you really download THAT many movies?? I really would have no interest in dl'ing more than say 5 movies a year. Myb once I started though I'd realize it' that easy & just dl alot of them.. so I'm not sure.

Re: Fair Usage Policy (File Sharing ect..)
Most ISPs are going to this regardless of where you're at. I know that Comcast in the US has a monthly limit of 250GB. Most have something similar, though they don't advertise it. I have mixed feelings on fair usage. The reality is that some people completely abuse the system. They torrent and download anything their heart desires. The provider only has so much bandwidth allocated and if they let everyone exceed 250GB (or whatever is appropriate for your area) than it will be slow as shit. It's funny to me, because it's really coming back full circle to what it was before AOL started offering unlimited dial-up in the late 90s. In the early/mid-90s when I first started getting on the net (chat rooms were the coolest thing ever) 10-30 hours of online time a month was the standard. I remember using all of my allowance to get my parents to buy me the 30 hours for 30$ deal at Prodigy and I struggled to use all 30 hours (mostly playing checkers which I thought was so awesome).
They got us all hooked on crack the past 10 years with unlimited internet, throwing netflix, X-box live and a bunch of other bandwidth hogs at us. Now that we're used to it, they're going to revert back to the 90s model of internet, except they won't be charging us by the hour but by how much we download. Quite genius really. Kudos for the people behind this.

My next door neighbor just had his cable internet shut off for the second time. He's one of those people who is either at work, or at home downloading something. You would think he might have learned after the 1st time, but evidently not.
He told me this morning he's switching to DSL because, "Mediacom pissed me off."
On the bright side, maybe my cable internet will run a little faster now.

lol, except cell phone companies do offer unlimited text and minutes. Most charge 100$ a month for that plan.
