Re: Olympic champion Michael Phelps busted with a bong...
I'm not critisizing him for smoking it....i'm critisizing him because he may have just ruined his own career, hell if you are gonna do this kinda thing then use some descretion and not in a room where some jackass may take your picture and ruin your life for shits and giggles..it is different for phelps because he is an athlete that represents his country on the world stage
but he is the american golden boy so i'm sure he'll get some leniency
but yeah as for critisizing him for having a good time...no like you said that would make me a hypocrite..but he's not like me because i dont have the eye of the public on me waiting for me to fuck up..the media feeds on this type of crap and he just gave them lunch, this kid has the world in his hands, he needs to think every decision through, or it'll slip away from him...thats why i called him a dumbass
Re: Olympic champion Michael Phelps busted with a bong...
I think this is quite funny and I do not hold anything against Phelps. I don't see how you guys can point the finger either, considering you've all smoked weed before too...If it was okay enough for you to do it, it should be okay enough for him to do it...
Don't give that crap about how this is a different circumstance, because it really isn't. It boils down to holding yourself to the same standard that you hold anyone else to, regardless of position or class standing.
You're completely wrong. None of us have ever been paid millions of dollars in endorsements. None of us have ever had our image attatched to a product. None of us have ever been promoted as a role model. Thats' the difference and it's a huge difference whether you aknowledge it or not. If you are in a position like Michael Phelps you don't smoke weed(in public) you don't get busted for DUI's. It's simple.
Tell me this. If Peyton Manning or Tom Brady gets busted using a bong is that o.k.? I mean it's o.k. for you it must be o.k. for them right? Going by your reasoning it would be fine as well if Barack Obama was photgraphed getting high. Is that cool? Not a chance. When you're in certain positions it's your obligation to keep a clean image. You're being paid and paid insanely well to do so. Not to mention regardless of what any of us think weed is still illegal. That's the difference.

I've never smoked weed. I don't have a problem with him or anyone doing it. I think it should be legalized. It's more harmless than alcohol. But from a PR standpoint it's not good for his career. He should have waited until he was retired to become a pothead.
Re: Olympic champion Michael Phelps busted with a bong...
He's 23, jeez let him live a little. Also I don't think any of us saw photos or video of him waking up at 5am EVERY morning for the past 5 years while he was swimming a grueling 5 or 6 hours a day whereas millions of other kids his age were joining frats & attending keggers drinking in the basement at a party of the baseball house.
Let the guy live a little. Sure he probably shouldn't have done it with people he apparently didn't know too well, but whoever took that picture & released it "broke the code"
Re: Olympic champion Michael Phelps busted with a bong...
We live in a different world now. There are no standards. His career will continue like nothing ever happened, just like that Disney chick who had nude photos all over the net but didn't suffer any consequences.
As far as weed goes, it gets a bad rap(and always will) because its regarded as a 'gateway drug'. I used to try and argue against that point years ago, but knowing I started with weed and quickly moved on to other drugs made me realize how futile(and hypocritical) my stance would be.

The counter arguement to that would be did you try alchohol or cigarettes before you smoked weed? If so, wouldn't they also be a "gateway drug"?
I hate that argument too. It's kinda like saying kissing & foreplay leads to unwanted teen pregnancy..
Re: Olympic champion Michael Phelps busted with a bong...
I don't think it's hypocritical at all. Do you honestly think if you didn't smoke weed you wouldn't have started popping pills and doing other drugs? If that first joint wasn't a joint but a Perk would you consider pain pills a gateway drug? I feel if you are prone to experimenting with drugs and like the idea of being in an altered state it is only a matter of time before you start using. Weed is more widely available and popular among younger kids so of course Mary will take the blame. Most my friends only smoke weed. Never touched a hard drug in their lives. I myself is a different case.

If you can explain to me how this makes these people unable to do their jobs well...then you have a point. If your job is to be sober all the time, then you have a point.
I do not care that he smoked weed and even don't care if he does it again.
