Blagojevich Calls Illinois State Senate Impeachment Trial a 'Kangaroo Court'
Gov. Rod Blagojevich declared his innocence Monday, calling the Illinois State Senate impeachment proceedings a "kangaroo court."
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich on Monday called the state Senate's impeachment proceedings against him a "kangaroo court," telling FOX News' Geraldo Rivera that "What's happening to me is unimaginable."
Blagojevich called on Illinois lawmakers to allow him to call witnesses to clear him of any wrongdoing.
In his first cable news interview since his arrest last November for allegedly trying to sell President Obama's U.S. Senate seat to the highest bidder, Blagojevich hammered away at the process that could remove him from office.
Click here to see Geraldo's interview with Governor Blagojevich.
"It's a kangaroo court...when they are basing an impeachment on a criminal allegation that their rules don't allow them to prove up, and they even worse than that don't allow me to disprove by preventing me from calling witnesses, then my lawyers and I believe that to be part of a process like that is to dignify a fraudulent impeachment process that sets a dangerous precedent for governors in Illinois and governors across America," he said.
Blagojevich said he is asking the state Senate to allow him to bring witnesses to show he did nothing unlawful.
"All I'm asking the state Senate to do is allow me to bring witnesses and bring evidence to show I did nothing wrong, and if they're going to say I did something wrong, then the least they should do is prove it up," he said.
The Illinois governor also emphasized White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel's statement last week that the two men never discussed anything inappropriate in regard to Obama's vacant Senate seat.
"Rahm Emanuel said on national television about a week or so ago that there was nothing improper in his conversations with me, and that's certainly accurate," he said.
When asked whom Emanuel wanted him to name to replace Obama in the U.S. Senate, Blagojevich declined to answer, saying, "those are private conversations."
Blagojevich also said that talk show host Oprah Winfrey was among those he considered to fill Obama's seat -- a revelation he made Monday morning during an interview on ABC's "Good Morning America."
"There were discussions...that was for real," he said.
Blagojevich added that his conversations over the Senate seat were taken "out of their proper context."
"There's embarrassment there, obviously, in private conversations. I would like every one of those tapes to be presented to the Illinois state senate, every one of them, and let them hear every one of those conversations, and see what those conversations -- what they were, where they were going and where they ended up."
Blagojevich spoke as the Illinois Senate convened an impeachment trial to decide whether he should be removed from office.
Chief Justice Thomas Fitzgerald began the trial by reminding senators they face "a solemn and serious business."
Senators were considering charges that the Democratic governor tried to sell Obama's Senate seat, that he used his authority to pressure campaign contributors and that he defied legislative decisions.

I find this whole thing very fascinating. Have you guys seen any of the clips from all the shows he was on today? He's a very charismatic guy...kinda fucked if any of the stuff he's saying is true.
Re: Blagojevich
I personally have not seen anything this guy did that was overly wrong. At least not enough that I should care.
But the neo-cons on Fox News have sure had a field day with it. This poor guy was being called Blagsonofabitch and trashed, before anyone truely knew what he did wrong.
Media conditioning to hate this guy imo.
Re: Blagojevich
Personally I think the guys guilty, and you do the crime you do the time. I do think most other politicians do similar things, but to get caught, and be on tape.. well.... Also it seems he was more blatant and boastful about it, not very discreet.
But on the other hand, ever since the Duke Lacrosse case I learned, I don't know very much until the facts come out. Don't be so quick to judge. I do think the media's really giving it to the guy, he just looks like a douchebag.

Are you kidding me? Do you know anything about this situation? He was caught red handed trying to SELL a senate seat...
Not to mention the countless other things he's done that were questionable...why does his wife have a job she's not qualified for right now?
Listen...Illinois politics are as corrupt as they get...and even the people here in Chicago give their politicians a long leash on this kind of stuff...
but make no mistake about it...this guy is a corrupt ass hole...as corrupt as they come...and I AM a Dem!

I actually called those guys innocent from the beginning.
It's not that I believe hate crimes don't happen, but the girl's story was weak, and to be completely honest with you, anything Al Sharpton runs his mouth about... last time I checked, his batting average was horrible.
A white on black crime, and Sharpton is there within seconds to exploit it for screen time.

I know now, and I agree. But in the very beginning, everyone kind of bum rushed me with all this hate, then told me he did something very very bad, and when I asked what he did, no one could give me a straight answer, because they didn't really know.
They just knew Jay Leno said it was bad.
That's all i'm saying...

I admit I bought into the media on them. Poor kids, well not "poor" per se, but I later saw something on 60 minutes & not only were they not guilty, they barely did anything (I still think they called for a stripper & then a black girl showed up & they told her to get lost, not that that's a crime). Anyway, I never saw it as a hate crime, or black on white, but when I saw "college kids hire stripper & have sex/rape her" I thought, 'hmmmm.... guilty. '
Sucks the bitch lied about it, ruined their names & lives. Regardless, it was a learning experience for me
Re: Blagojevich
He's very crooked. I'm in Chicago too, and the rest of the country doesn't know the half of it. He pretty much enacted his own policies by circumventing the legislature, using taxpayer money to fly between Chicago and Springfield continually. He's just a dumbass. I look at that thread in the GNR section debating whether Axl is crazy, and I think Rod has done more in the open media in front of all of us to look crazy without a doubt. Comparing himself to Ghandi, Mother Teresa, MLK, distorting the facts.
He CAN call witnesses, just not the ones the Feds are interested in. I mean, really, what good is it gonna do to get Rahm Emanuel to say Blago didn't ask him about selling the seat. He's caught on tape talking to others about it already.
Illinois is as democratic as they come, and even all the dems here hate him. The vote is gonna be 99-0 to impeach.

Last I checked, one of them were actually going after the girl, and taking her to the cleaners in court for defamation. But then again, if she's broke as a joke, where are they going to get their money anyways?
I remember laughing my head off, when Jesse Jackson ran them down like they were freakin' Klan members who raped a poor innocent black girl, and yet when the kids were cleared of any wrong doing and the girl admitted it was a lie, when Jackson was cornered about apologizing to the boys for defaming them with a lie, Jackson felt he had no need to apologize, because the boys still committed a moral crime by hiring a stripper to begin with. They deserved what happened to them.
This coming from a man that has how many bastards running around the world?
Proved Jackson is a freakin' racist.
Re: Blagojevich
This douche bag was terrible on Rachel Maddow last night. Like others have said, this guy is on tape begging for anything of value in exchange for that Senate seat so he doesn't really have any direction to go but down.
Him considering offering the seat to Oprah would have been a nightmare scenario for this entire country.

Re: Blagojevich
He's such an a-hole. I saw him talking to the press after he got thrown out of his job and he actually compared his unemployment to regular people who have lost their jobs lately. I was pretty offended by that, given that I was one of those people. I didn't do anything wrong but I lost my job because the economy went to hell in a hand basket and my company's contracts dried up really quick. But I got lucky and landed on my feet a month later with a better job. A lot of other people aren't so fortunate and I feel awful for them. And here's Blago comparing himself to them. He got exactly what he deserved, and yet he's trying to play the innocent victim. Pathetic.
