Re: polluxlm Discover the Classics - Goats Head Soup (1973)
I've always liked the Stones. One of the few bands my father still remember from his youth (no, he was not a dopie, just not a music lover). So when they visited the country in 98 we went to my very first proper rock concert. The image of a 55 year old Keith Richards opening the show with Satisfaction in a leopard fur is still etched in my mind. 40.000 people, 1% percent of the population of the entire country, was there that night.
So I always knew the hits. But as with most great bands I eventually realized that hits are just a minuscule representation of the great work in their catalogs. Let It Bleed, Exile On Main St., Beggars Banquet, they all contain some fantastic work that the casual fan has never even heard.
Goats Head Soup, the follow up to their ultimate classic Exile, was next on my list. Starting off with a classic blues riff from Keith you are in for a hell of a ride. You soon realize what many of our contemporary artist have been listening to over the years. In one of the opening tracks I couldn't help myself thinking "this is where Fleetwood Mac was created" and "that sounds exactly like GN'Rs classic Izzy riffs!". It's like listening to a history book, hearing the origins of rock n' roll. Then comes Angie. Yeah, More Than Words and Patience are great efforts, but this here is what it all comes down to. Heartbreaker is a definite top 10 song for their entire career.
In the end it's not the major classic that their previous albums were, but still an excellent, groovy chill out rock n' roll album.

My new found classic is Their Satanic Majestic's Request. A masterpiece, but really different than anything the Stones did. They were so full of drugs that made an experimental album. I don't know what would have happened if they had followed that path.
