Cyber Attack on Pentagon May Have Come From China, Admiral Says
The attack was strategically timed to hit between the presidential election and Inauguration Day, according to a Navy official.

The cyber attack on the Department of Defense that has led to a ban on the use of external hardware devices may have come from China, a Navy rear admiral outside the Pentagon told his staff, FOX News has learned.

The admiral, in a briefing to his staff on Thursday, characterized the virus as a coordinated attack that was strategically timed to hit between the Nov. 4 presidential election and Inauguration Day, Jan. 20.

He described how a service member with access to classified information inadvertently loaded the virus onto his computer via a flash drive. As a result, he no longer knows where the computer's sensitive information is being stored.

The cyber attack so alarmed the Pentagon that it took the unprecedented step of banning the use of external hardware devices, such as flash drives and recordable CDs and DVDs.

The attack came in the form of a global virus or worm that is spreading rapidly throughout a number of military networks.

"We have detected a global virus for which there has been alerts, and we have seen some of this on our networks," a Pentagon official told FOX News. "We are now taking steps to mitigate the virus."

The official could not reveal the source of the attack because that information remains classified.

"Daily there are millions of scans of the GIG (the Global Information Grid), but for security reasons we don't discuss the number of actual intrusions or attempts, or discuss specific measures commanders in the field may be taking to protect and defend our networks," the Defense Department said in an official statement.

Military computers are often referred to as part of the GIG, a system of 17 million computers, many of which house classified or sensitive information.

FOX News obtained a copy of a memo sent out last week to an Army division warning of the cyber attack:

"Due to the presence of commercial malware, CDR USSTRATCOM has banned the use of removable media (thumb drives, CDRs/DVDRs, floppy disks) on all DoD networks and computers effective immediately."

FOX News' Justin Fishel and Jennifer Griffin contributed to this report.

You guys have no idea how much of a bitch this is.  I can't go into details, but my Soldiers have spent the past week formatting and reinstalling computers out the ass.

Oh yea, on a side note, the Army blocked me from surfing GNRevolution from a Gov computer, so I can only chat now over my shitty dial-up speed connection I get from some Phillipino guys here.

Anything China does to us, we deserve. We brought it all on ourselves. There's no one else to blame. This is what happens when you sell the country's soul so you can save a nickel on products made in sweatshops(irony being you had to borrow that nickel). Clinton gave them the keys to this country in the mid 90's, and Bush invited them in. Only thing shocking at this point is the fact we aren't speaking Chinese yet.

Now that's fucked up. What's really sad is whatever you fix will likely be with items that come from China.

Now THAT is really fucked up.

I'll take a wild guess here and say that's because the number would be so high the general public would be in chaos, or at least very very shocked.

Events, imaginary or not, Big Brother here we come.

I got my connection cut once because I had a virus on my comp. Still had to pay of course. This is only the beginning. A new internet system is being implemented, one that will drastically increase authorities ability to censor and block. To quote the hackers: We know what the government is doing. We just want them to know we got an army of hackers ready to unleash the worst viruses possible into your systems when you attempt to come down on us.

I wouldn't rule out something like that in all those undisclosed attempts.

This is not big brother Pollux.  This is security.  Me surfing GNRevolution, while fun, serves no military purpose.  Furthermore, it could present a forum for me to say shit I'm not supposed to.  There is a world of difference between the Army stoppoing me from websurfing and sucking up valuable bandwidth and big brother blocking sites for civilians.  There is also a world of difference between big brother and an internet company stopping you from infecting their network (I assume you were on broadband, but even if you weren't...).   Government computers are not a place or medium to have fun on and treat as you would your personal computer.  Allowing people to hook up IPODs and other media devices are just begging to allow a trojan or virus onto a network.

Big Brother is security. It's always about security. For the nation, for the people, for you. Allowing you to use the internet outside of duty, or on duty, doesn't serve the military any purpose either. It's just life. We're not robots. I assume you are allowed to visit the 'safe' sites, so it's not about purpose or money, not really.

You know how it's going down. Australia just implemented nation wide "security" filters. So if you want a connection you are only allowed to visit sites the government don't deem "dangerous". You kidding me?

That's why we have virus protection. There's no need for blocking out stuff on suspicion. Everybody knows where you get this shit, on all those "free" sites promising the world. Only reason I got one was because I was drunk and fucking horny. 16

Btw, my current provider doesn't give a shit, so it's obviously not a big deal to them. Just some of the companies out to scam an extra buck from people, and the government looking to restrict your use of the only free medium we have. Excuse me if I smell a rat. Not saying this incident wasn't valid, I'm just noticing a trend.
