Ryeisha "Rye Rye" Berrain is an American rapper from Baltimore, Maryland, United States. She met the musician Blaqstarr, a friend of her sister's, and worked with him on her early material. She met M.I.A. in a studio after M.I.A. overheard one of her songs
Rye Rye is the first artist signed to M.I.A.'s record label N.E.E.T., and her album is set to be released in March of 2009. Rye Rye collaborated with several artists on the LP which is set to feature artwork by M.I.A.. With DJ Diplo, she worked on a song called "Wassup Wassup". Songs such as "Gangsta Girl" and "Bang it Out" were produced by Zakee Kuduro, "Hardcore Girls" with The Count and Sinden, and "Reasons". "Hardcore Girls" appears on the Hardcore Girls EP by The Count and Sinden via Domino Records. She has described her sound as "unique, hard-hitting," saying "anything thrown I can handle it."
Rye Rye began performing at the age of 16. She toured with M.I.A. during the fall and winter of 2007 and early 2008 and briefly with Afrikan Boy. She features on a remix of M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" with Afrikan Boy, which appears on the Paper Planes - Homeland Security Remixes EP by M.I.A. and is available on her MySpace. Her song "Shake It To The Ground," a collaboration with Blaqstarr, was made available for download on iTunes. Released via Mad Decent, she has also made a music video for the song.
She appears on M.I.A.'s remix of Busy Signal's "Tic Toc," an unfinished version of which was showcased on Gilles Peterson's Radio 1 show. Rye Rye travelled to Sweden to perform in summer of 2008 and is featured on the rapclash remix of Swedish musician Adrian Lux's single "Strawberry". Rye Rye and Zakee were featured in Fader magazine.
Pursuing her music career, Rye Rye has also expressed interest in attending college to study child care.
