Re: Santogold
Time to give props to this amazing artist. Was skeptical at first because of the M.I.A. connection and figured it was just some chick trying to ride her coattails. Boy, was I wrong. I actually think she gets unfairly lumped in with M.I.A. just because they're friends, done shows together, have Switch as a producer, etc. Santogold is much more easily accessible to a mainstream audience than M.I.A., and I would not be shocked one bit if this album explodes sometime this year. Major 80's influences in her work, and this retro vibe she's got going is killer.
From her myspace page:
This is better than good; this is gold'” SANTOGOLD!
Santogold is a survivor of a half century worth of living along musical evolution's most cutting edges. The only live act that can boast of having out-aged Barbara Bush, having outlived Mr. Miyagi and out styled Liberace, Santogold is here with future flavor.
Already receiving weighty club rotation and airplay in urban Afghanistan and downtown Beirut, Santogold is the first act of the century to boast a post-war following on the International Space Station Mir. Following a live performance broadcast from three thousand miles off the Cape of Good Hope last June, inmates at Leavenworth Penitentiary received Santogold with a celebratory confetti parade. Just another first for the modern super group that knows no bound.
Composed of absolutely no members, Santogold is also the first musical outfit capable of claiming the planet's broiling collective consciousness as their front woman. Longtime collaborator, singer and songwriter Santi White says of her work with Santogold, 'We began trying to write pop songs to sell, which made us depressed, so we started writing songs for ourselves instead.' The results of that self centered conceit is the songwriting work heard for the first time on the full length self-titled Santogold album, released in 2008 on Downtown/Lizard King (US) and Atlantic (UK).
As unmastered tracks leaked over the internet this past November, the request lines of radio stations from Miami to Hanoi began freezing with a flood of calls from listeners eager to hear the new Santogold sound over their frequencies. From his radio show in the United Arab Emirates capital city of Abu Dhabi, Michael Jackson (the King of Pop) played what Santogold snippets he had been able to pirate from a bootleg MySpace page dedicated to the group. Days later, BBC Radio One reported that the unreleased Santogold debut was heard blasting from the iPod shuffle of Libyan ruler Moammar Qaddafi as he entered an international summit in the Nigerian capital of Abuja. Recognizing the urgent need to address the uproarious buzz, Santogold released the following statement through their label reps at Lizard King: 'The response to our unmastered songs has been both premature and phenomenal! We were happy to hear that the children of Darfur have found hope in our melodic interpretation of life on the battlefield of love! We're hoping that each and every 20-something from downtown San Francisco to central Mumbai will also learn something from our work! And to the people dropping no-knock fire on old ladies in Atlanta: shame on you! Santogold ain't with that shit!'
The trajectory of such early successes leading to newfound political clout is nothing new for Santogold, whose debut album, though half a century in the making, is sure to rock glass pipes from the Lincoln Memorial to Buckingham palace. The flavor of the gold is guaranteed: Santogold!

I've been beaten to death by L.E.S. Artistes because it's on an NHL video-game, and they always have a very short tracklist. It's decent, but nothing mind-blowing.
From 30-second samples on iTunes - You'll Find a Way sounds alright, as does Lights Out. Everything else is nothing I find too special.
I like her more than MIA, and I'm always put off by female vocalists, which is my problem, and one I should try harder to remedy (still have to fight to let myself enjoy Elastica).

She gets unfairly compared to M.I.A. because of their connection(friendship, same producers,etc.). Only song on the album that even resembles M.I.A. is Creator. Well, the You'll Find a Way remix has some M.I.A. samples, but remixes don't count.
She's more like Pat Benatar, Blondie, etc. She is really channeling the whole early 80's pop rock/new wave vibe. A breath of fresh air in my opinion. A rarity for someone to take music that would appear "dated" yet actually make it relevant.
The M.I.A. connection might actually stifle her career a bit. Not looking that way as she has Budweiser sponsoring her and will be opening for Coldplay on their tour, so mainstream success is a huge possibility.
This album has about 4 or 5 hits on it, and its not fair for her as an artist if people have certain preconceived notions about her that aren't really true.
This album has no Galangs or Bucky Done Guns. Its like she went back to 1983 and recorded this.
Not sure if "mind blowing" is the right term to describe it, although its close. Its just a really fresh take on a genre of music long gone. This is one of the reasons I rank this album higher than the Chinese Democracy sessions. She takes "dated" genres, yet makes them sound a bit new. GNR hasn't done that.
She wrote and recorded this incredible album in 8 weeks. That's insane.
I had no idea L.E.S. Artistes was on a video game. She is definitely getting a killer push with this album, but we'll have to wait and see exactly how this cookie crumbles.
Her music can appeal to casual music fans. Its not over the top or complex like some of M.I.A's material.
Santogold is new, yet she will eventually have the same problem that M.I.A. has....time. Both in their early 30's, and as everyone knows, its when artists hit their peak. Unfortunately for MIA, it didn't set the world on fire. Now Maya is most likely gonna make her "sellout album". Her last comment regarding her work is "I better hurry before Fergie copies it." Thats scary. She may be willing to destroy her artistic credibility and releasing something like Rihanna or Britney to cash one big paycheck.
Re: Santogold
This album just re-entered the Billboard Top 200 charts. Its at 190. Maybe getting that opening slot on Coldplay's tour is bringing it some more attention. "Lights Out" is the next single, and that will definitely do some damage. In fact, you can get a remix of the track for free on Budweiser's website.
Kala also shot up a few spots on Billboard(151).

Just listened to L.E.S. Artists on her Myspace page - not bad. Nothing that I'd buy, but I'd gladly listen to it over anything else that's considered Top 40 these days.
