METALLICA Is Preparing Deluxe Versions Of '…And Justice For All' And 'Black' Albums
October 12, 2017
METALLICA is preparing deluxe remastered versions of its "…And Justice For All" (1988) and "Metallica" albums and is reaching out to its hardcore fans for help to get content for the new editions.
Says the band in a social media post: "With the deluxe box sets of 'Kill 'Em All' and 'Ride The Lightning' behind us, and 'Master Of Puppets' less than a month away, it's time to start trudging forward with '…And Justice For All' and 'Metallica'.
"As you may remember, we asked you for help in putting together the first three box sets and, to make sure there's a fan footprint on all of these releases, we'll be doing that again! We're looking for anything and everything you might have from August 1987 through July 1993… photos (taken by you!), flyers, ticket stubs, backstage passes and whatever other mementos you may have from that time. Also, if you happened to interview James [Hetfield], Lars [Ulrich], Kirk [Hammett] or Jason [Newsted] during that time and still have the recording, please let us know!
"Make your mark on these albums by emailing us at submissions@metclub.com to share your story and receive more info about submitting these little pieces of history. Nothing is too small or too trivial… share your archives with your fellow fans and have some fun with us walking down memory lane."
While "...And Justice For All" is considered one of METALLICA's classics, it has been criticized almost since the day it was released in 1988 for the lack of any bass guitar on the record. Jason Newsted's playing is virtually buried in the mix — and many fans feel that drummer Lars Ulrich, who had very specific ideas for how he wanted his drums to sound, is to blame.
"...And Justice For All" was Jason Newsted's first full-length album with METALLICA after he replaced late bassist Cliff Burton in 1986.
The album was the first by the band to sell more than a million copies and featured their first radio hit, "One", which was also the basis of the group's first music video.
The record was nominated for the first-ever Grammy for "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance", but infamously lost to JETHRO TULL's "Crest Of A Knave".
METALLICA's self-titled LP in 2014 became the first album to sell 16 million copies since Nielsen SoundScan started tracking sales in 1991.
"Metallica" was already certified 16 times platinum on December 13, 2012 by the RIAA (Recording Industry Association Of America) for shipments in excess of 16 million copies in the U.S.
The album in 2009 surpassed SHANIA TWAIN's 1997 record, "Come On Over", as the best-selling CD of the SoundScan era.
The album was the first of four collaborations with producer Bob Rock, with whom the band clashed throughout the recording of the disc.
METALLICA performed "the black album" in its entirety at a number of European festivals in 2012.

The liquidation of the vault continues....
We all know what it's time to finally hear.....
Jason on AJFA. If they don't unload it, it's gonna piss off a lot of hardcore fans. It's time to hear it. It's not going to alter the legacy of that album so just let us fans finally have that experience.
Looking forward to more Black album demos too.

One other thing.....
Really smart of them to not wait for actual anniversaries of these albums to roll by. You wait four more years for Black album's anniversary, even fewer people will be paying for music.
I've been saying it for a couple years....the time is now to make money from your vault. Artists/bands like Metallica and Springsteen understand that....others do not.

Cool stuff.
Does any one have any of the other albums they've done? Are they remixed and remastered? I'd be curious to know how they sound, as while I love metaliica, the recordings sound very old when compared to modern releases these days. New mixes would be awesome.
Re: Metallica preps Justice and Black album deluxe versions
Interesting...im on rhe fence if I'll get these tho...remixes are fine and all but since the orifinal is so iconic they may sound odd...especially if thwy let Lars use his production on it...he tends to overkill the drums

Good point. Especially at the $100+ price point, you're really targeting the hard fans while others keep dropping off year after year.
Hope they have more demos tbh. Looking on Amazing on their tracklist & RTL has a cd of 'em, but Kill Em All only seems to have a few demos, and a ton of live stuff. Cool I guess, I have Nirvana's With The Lights Out, and that has demos going as far back as to them recordking on a boom box in their basement pretty much. Plus some other tracks with alternate lyrics or just rough cuts. It kinda showed their songwriting process a bit of putting it together. Haven't listened in years but I think some he'd just ad lib his way thru the song. Anyway, I'd like to hear some outtakes, esp the Black Album.
