Re: Headbangers Ball, Hair Metal & Grunge
Yeah, tbh the shift began before Nirvana, they're just the straw that broke the camels back so to speak. IMHO I think GnR was a pretty big part of it. After them bands like Tesla & The Black Crowes hit it big, with more roots rock sounds, less hair metal. Also, RHCP & Jane's Addiction remember 'Been Caught Stealing' was a pretty big hit? RHCP 'Suck My Kiss' came out only a few weeks before Nevermind (Sept 91 IIRC). And remember Faith No More's Epic in 90-91. I remember they had a bizarre SNL appearance,.
I had the Cinderella casette from that year, they totally swayed away from the old 'hair' metal and had more of a blues rock sound. I liked it, it never caught on. I think the record companies knew a change was coming, remember REM's 'Losing My Religion' was a massive hit in Spring 91? I am surprised PJ Alive & Primus are on here.
I wonder what 'Ball Buster segment' was? A friend of mine had a prank calls CD from a group called 'The Ballbusters'. Came out more like 93-94, was basically a Jerky Boys ripoff and I read on the internet years later some of them were faked.

So Pearl Jam was first! I love Alive.
Me too, the first 19,000 times I heard it
I think some grunge, especially PJ has gotten played out to me. I do think melodic rock/glam holds up pretty well, but maybe I'm just not as tired of hearing it like alternative stuff which is still played constantly. I should create a YT playlist of some of these songs that stood the test of time including the underground/lesser known bands.

Yes Alive is played out. Appetite still sounds fresh to me. I also thought Bush's debut album was awesome but now it seems ordinary.
Re: Headbangers Ball, Hair Metal & Grunge
The above lists are playlists from MTV's Headbangers Ball.
Neemo.....those bands you aren't recognizing are mostly second tier speed metal bands. A few obscure hair metal bands thrown in too.
I've always said speed metal was on the verge of going mainstream in 90-91. Few believe me but these HBB playlists is the proof in the pudding. I also realize its mainly because some change had to be made. This is why you see this unique period in 91 before the Nirvana shit hit the fan where they're letting the genres battle it out to an extent.
If we get down to brass tacks, Pearl Jam wasn't first. AIC was first, Temple of the Dog second, Pearl Jam third.
I don't remember ball buster. I'm tempted to watch a couple episodes on youtube and find out.

What about Soundgarden? Shouldn't they and AIC be up there for first?

When did Headbanger's Ball die off itself? Did Grunge kill it off too?
