Indeed.
Although when you consider that modern movies compete with "I'll just download a boot" or "wait for the dvd so I don't have to deal with people at the cinema" or "it looks better on my bluray" or "I want the new X box game" - I think titanic has done surprisingly well on that list - although it's far from my favourite film.
All I mean is in 1977 when SW came out there were a lot less options for spending disposable income on entertainment than there are today.

Dude, downloading, wide screens and dvd's were not around in 1997 (Yes, we have become that old!). Least not enough to have any measurable effects.
Impressive sure, but not out of the ordinary.
Avatar is more surprising. Not just because of everything you said, but because it's such a shitty movie.

Lol...you're right...I think it was 1999 I got my first DVD player come to think of it!!!! In 1995 I was probably wishing I could afford a laser disc player hahaha
