Chris Cornell: "Guns N 'Roses were all normal types minus one"
Without saying anything negative about Axl (Rose), what I remember most is that Duff (McKagan) and Slash and the rest of the people were normal people, friendly and warm in a rock band that just wanted to rock. And then, as if this character to the 'Wizard of Oz' behind the curtain that seemed to complicate what was the most ideal situation in which it could be: were the most successful rock band in the world and famous. At every concert, hundreds of thousands of fans wanted to hear their songs. For some reason, there seemed to be an obstacle to come out and participate in that. That's what I remember most. It's sad.

Then again. It's that same angst that gives Axl his lyric writing mojo and killer tone IMO.

You can have angst and attitude yet still be a cool dude. See Bon Scott. The most perfect front man ever is probably Mick Jagger.

Mick Jagger was Axl's idol as a band leader. Unfortunately he doesn't have Mick's skills that are required to lead a huge rock band successfully. Jagger is a perfect machine on the stage and an accountant off the stage. Axl is hit or miss live (if and when he makes the gig), but what's much worse in this case, he's a paranoid, insecure control freak. GN'R's downfall in a nutshell.

Riiight.
Whatever Chris. That abnormality is what made his band the biggest in the world, while yours, although good to great, never rose above being a second tier outfit.
Oh, and maybe someone should tell him it was Axl that helped jump start his career by putting them on that huge tour in the first place.

So you're saying the guy is therefore not allowed to form an opinion of the guy?? Do you always speak highly of your bosses, who gave you the job? Never had a wierd one, or strange one, or an ass.
Anyway yeah he pretty much went thru this a few years ago when he told the story of walking backstage thru the hallways and Axl walks by with security guards and wearing a robe and passes by Chris and says "Hey bro!".. Chris humorously recalled it being a surreal event and thought to himself at the time "Did that really just happen?"
Mikkimakka that's interesting you say Mick Jagger is the perfect frontman, cause while in Kieth Richards book "Life", he calls it LVS (Lead Vocalist Syndrome) where the ego gets to their head. He compliments Mick thouroughly thru the years, and as a phenomenal songwriter (wrote Wild Horses in just a few minutes after Kieth played those chords at the studio), but also says he really hasn't known his boyhood friend much at all since about 1972. He said Mick's alot different now, and offstage they don't speak a whole lot.

Obviously not. If he wants to slam a fellow musician (while claiming he's not) for recognizing his talent at an early point in his career and giving him a break, sure feel free. Yeah, terrible boss, even throwing him a friendly hello in the hallway. I've had mid level bosses who wouldn't even do that.
It doesn't help that his opinion is total bs either. Axl was a late mofo with unusual antics sure, but him not coming out and putting on a massive show was a rarity. Despite the myths the times he actually caused abrupt cancellations can be counted on a hand or two.

But that's a good, nice story. He could have used that angle here too, but for whatever reason decided to put a malicious spin on it. Like Axl was some kind of detrimental force to the band.

I know that they have issues. Mick has with Keith, Keith has with Mick. I don't doubt they are not friends anymore. Mick is egomaniac, for sure. Keith was/is a druggie and a heavy drinker. But they are still together, because Mick, whatever an ass boss he can be, makes (t)his band functioning. Because he maybe a dictator, but a reliable one. These people can build empires. The disfunctionals leave mess behind them and not much to remember, except the feuds.

I've always felt that "The Greats" have to be just a little more than different than the rest of us to accomplish what they do/did.
Problem is when they are "different", but cannot deliver art.
