Good words from Hetfield. Rock can't die and eventually there will be a good band that comes around. Younger talent nowadays seems to be more interesting in making electronica honestly so I think it will be a little while before the perfect storm comes around and we get another big rock group.

Rock takes itself too seriously.
I think this is probably the most honest answer. Alot of the more recent successful bands such as Creed and Nickelback have both complained about the "post grunge" title for such a reason.
Arguing has went back and forth for years about grunge being the 'last real rock artform', that re-invented the wheel to such a point that it carved it's own niche.
Everything after basically incorporated the grunge sound (melodies, instrumentation) with hair metal themes of the late 80's, and have pretty much been dropping that on rock radio since the late 90's in perfect streamlined fashion, so much to the point that well over a decade has gone by since anyone could tell the difference between artists anymore.
Is rock dead?
Popularized rock is, but rock is still very much alive. It's just become an underground act again, waiting to be reborn. Has has all music.
There's FAR better original pop and ambient music out there in the amateur scene, then there is on the radio. The internet has now become the radio, and radio is a dinosaur playing what the record company shills tell them to.

Wasting Light-Foo Fighters, A Different Kind of Truth-Van Halen, Slash's new record, and a few other albums I've picked up proved to me that rock is alive and kicking. Just needs more artists to step up to the plate and deliver the goods.

Rock's not dead...but the interesting thing is there's a bit of a void of new talent at the top ..look at who headlines the big shows...Ac/Dc, Iron Maiden, Metallica...you could have the same headline set in 1989.....and where's the younger acts that bring something unique?
There's cool young acts out there...but they're often sound-alikes.
Buckcherry to me is like AFD era GNR redone...and Airbourne is like Ac/Dc redone....and they're amongst the younger and talented groups you see.
I guess a band like A7x is next generation...and they're great too...but I can't see download headlined by A7x, Buckcherry and Airbourne even though I love those bands.
I mean look at this year...rock is about Slash and Van Halen...they're awesome but they're old. It's quite surprising considering most of pop culture is very focused on the young.

I think the prominence of so many bands whose best days were 20-30 years ago does suggest that there's not so much going on with rock these days. But rock just used to be everything - Guitar music was dominant for a really long period. It may be fraying into other things, and the rock label may be too tied down.

Rock isn't cool or new anymore. The same thing happened to Jazz. But Jazz was intellectual and so went underground and pulled an intellectual crowd. Rock music doesn't have that kind of fanbase.
I think the top bands in the world today, like Metallica and Ac/Dc are held in too much reverence by the younger bands. That keeps younger bands from ever trying to reach the top. IMHO
