DAVE MUSTAINE: 'I Got Into Witchcraft And Black Magic And It Ruined My Life' - Mar. 18, 2011
Joel McIver of U.K.'s Total Guitar magazine caught up with MEGADETH frontman Dave Mustaine to talk about the band's seminal album "Peace Sells… But Who's Buying?", as part of the magazine's thrash special (Total Guitar issue 213 - on sale March 18). Instead they wound up talking about black magic, Catholicism and SLAYER. A couple of excerpts from the chat that weren't used in the article follow below.
Total Guitar: Dave, it's 25 years since the "Peace Sells… But Who's Buying?" album. Any plans to play it live?
Mustaine: Performance wise, "The Conjuring" is one of the heaviest songs on the record, but unfortunately it's got black magic in it and I promised that I wouldn't play it any more, because there's a lot of instructions for hexes in that song. Although it seems kinda corny, anybody who's a Wiccan or a warlock or anything like that will know that all of that stuff is instrumental.
When I got into black magic I put a couple of spells on people when I was a teenager and it haunted me forever, and I've had so much torment. People say, "Goddamn, Dave never gets a break, he's had such a hard life," and I just think, "No, Dave didn't — he got into black magic and it ruined his life." It wasn't that I was a bad guy or that I had a big mouth, it was that I got into witchcraft and black magic and it ruined my life. Fortunately for me, with all the work and the love of my friends, and not giving up with my guitar playing, I got over it. So I look back now and I think, "Hmm, I don't wanna play 'The Conjuring'."
I look at songs like "Black Friday" and I think, "That would be a good song to play, too," but I look at the lyrics, which are about a homicidal madman who goes on a killing spree. Now, the irony of all of this is that I said I wasn't going to play it but we've got the 25-year anniversary coming up and people are saying we have to do this record. And I'm thinking that I can't possibly do that and stay true to myself. But I'm sure where there's a will there's a way.
When I first got saved about 10 years ago, I was really scared and I was basically holding on to anything that I heard in church or whatever, but as I've grown I've learned a lot and lightened up a lot, and I see people around me doing certain things and instead of me saying, "Man, you shouldn't do that!" I think quietly to myself, "Dude, you don't know what you're doing…" It's a huge growth process.
Total Guitar: Tom Araya of SLAYER is a practicing Catholic, and he goes onstage and sings "The Antichrist" every night…
Mustaine: Yeah. Y'know, I really cherish the relationship that I've rebuilt with the guys in SLAYER right now and I'm gonna sidestep that, because I don't know anything about Catholicism and I do know that I am very appreciative of not having any feuds right now, so I'm gonna skip that one, if you don't mind.
Total Guitar 213 (on sale March 18 to April 14) is the first to feature its brand new look, wider page format and, with an extra 32 pages of in-depth interviews, gear reviews and songs to learn.
(Music, lyrics: Mustaine)
Welcome to out sanguinary sect of worship,
Feel at home in our black conventicle,
As we anathematise,
All of those who oppose us,
Don't summon the devil,
Don't call the priests,
If you need the strength,
The conjuring. Obey!!!
Behold the flames rise,
From the compass' cardinal points,
Burn the sacred oil,
And, with the ashes you'll annoint,
Arrange the symbols,
Of the wizard, and, magician,
Light the candles,
Place the parchment paper in position,
Between its leaves place,
The lash from a black cat's eye,
A straw of a broom,
Fold, and, burn, and, centralise,
Don't summon the devil,
Don't call the priests,
If you need the strength,
The conjuring,
I am the devil's advocate,
A salesman, if you will,
You know my name. [You know my name],
I met your father years ago,
Gave him what he'd please,
He called my name, you'll do the same,
I'm claiming what is mine by right,
It's time to close the deal,
You're bought and sold, bought and sold,
Come join me in my infernal depths,
Mephisto's hall of fame
I've got your soul, I've got your soul,
The conjuring. Obey!!!

This song obviously describes some kind of ritual, probably inspired by Dave's involvement with witchcraft at this stage in his career. The last several verses are from the point of view of Satan claiming the soul of someone who has made a deal with the devil.
"I read the Satanic Bible and all that stuff, but it was so adverse to what I wanted, and is hasn't been until the past couple of years that all that stuff's been shaken. I've had to go through a lot of spiritual healing to get clean. I don't think people really realize how intense that stuff is and the marks it can leave on you. There was one time where I did some witchcraft on this guy who had punched me, and it physically affected him, and to this day I regret it. That will never leave my mind - the power of that stuff. I would rather light a candle than curse the darkness. There was a time when I was very comfortable being part of the darkness because I didn't understand the light. But now I like seeing people smile more than watching them wrinkle up their forehead and make the devil's sign. If half these kids only knew that the way they make the devil's sign really means 'I love you' in sign language anyway." (Mustaine, 1995)
"Our theory is, we play slower tempos, the girls will come. Last night they were dancing to 'The Conjuring.' We're up there going, 'Look at that. They're dancing to the satanic part of the set'!" (Ellefson, 1993)
References:
Sanguinary means 'accompanied by carnage' or 'consisting of blood.'
A conventicle is a secret or illegal religious meeting.
To anathematize is to curse or condemn.
Mephisto is short for Mephistopheles, the devil in the Faust legend to whom Faust sold his soul.

If "ruining your life" is selling millions of records and making shitloads of money, then I need to take up black magic and start handing out hexes NOW.
Mustaine's journey is an interesting one that's for sure.
I often read about how he seems unhappy with his level of success (or at least was in the past) and it's hard to understand it at times....I mean being the frontman of a band half as good as megadeth would be like a dream come true for most people. He's clearly one of the best guitarists in the world, yet he still has that fire that drive to be better. Meanwhile at the same time as the cash, the fame and everything else, he also seems to have suffered a lot of darkness and unhappiness. He's quite complex. I've got his book but have only read the start so far - i'm looking forward to finishing it.
It's interesting too that he's not the first musician to fool around with magical stuff. I gather motley crue also messed around with it and became frightened and stoped. Also, given how hardcore dave seems to be about everything he does, when he was into magic, i'm sure he knew all about it.

Re: MUSTAINE:"I Got Into Witchcraft And Black Magic And It Ruined My Life"
There seems to have been a good few musical people involved in Black Magic.
Bowie, Zeppelin, Mustaine, Kerry King(?)
Don't know why people mess with that shit. I saw some freaky shit where people were fucking with a Ouija board on a nightly basis for a time.
People getting the same nightmares on the same nights, a swarm of flies appearing in a closed room in the basement, names of dead relatives coming out on the Board. Shadows on the stairwells, women being groped and men being pushed and punched by something invisible.
People stopped but the bad vibes remained and eventually they had to get a cleanser in to rid the place of whatever was lurking there as a result.
Stay away from that shit - don't even experiment.

Question: Is it to sell records? Are they really into it as a lifestyle?

Lyrics - King; Music - Hanneman, King]
Cursed
Black magic night
We've been struck down
Down in this Hell
Spells surround me day and night
Stricken by the force of evil light
The force of evil light
Cast
Under his spell
Blinding my eyes
Twisting my mind
Fight to resist the evil inside
Captive of a force of Satan's might
A force of Satan's might
Fighting the curse
Break it I must
Laughing in sorrow
Crying in lust
My strength slips fast
Soon I must fall
Victim of fortune
My sources grow small
Life slips away
As demons come forth
Death takes my hand
And captures my soul
