Re: METALLICA Discussion
I'm glad I'm not a fan of this band. Must be painful. What I saw on stage some weeks ago was way over the hill. How can Master Of Puppets sound so stale?
Really?
The recent live footage I've seen of the band, they haven't sounded so tight in years like they do now, and the new clips I've heard of the new album is also the most promising music I've heard from them in years as well.

Re: METALLICA Discussion
It is make or break.
I don't see how it's make or break now anymore than it was previously.
They released what was considered their worst album (St Anger) and they still went on to play sell out tours all over the world. Hell, even the last few years with no new album out they still pull a huge crowd. Metallica don't need to release anything and they'll still be popular.
Do you honestly believe that if the new album will make or break whether Metallica will continue to be popular? These guys are music legends, and the first 4 (or 5 if you count Black) albums have solidified them as such.
Re: METALLICA Discussion
It is make or break, but even if it's not that good I'd still be a casual fan. I'm not & never really was a huge fan, but I think they were great. Plus, look at the Stones & Aerosmith. Do you think their fans should quit going to shows?? It happens, we get older, so do they.
Getting older is fine. I love seeing Stones and Aerosmith shows even though they're not what they used to be. It's about adapting the style. Metallica however seems lost in that they still perceive themselves to be as badass as they were in the heyday. Same thing can be said about Axl on certain songs.
The show I saw (Pink Pop, Holland) was 'alright', but mostly it gave me the feeling of a cash grab and a sense of not keeping up with their own material. I'm not a fan, but I like a handful of songs. This night they gave me nothing.
When we saw Rage Against The Machine the next day we could clearly see the difference in the bands will to perform, and they're not spring chickens anymore either.

It's more of a cliche, but I meant this album could launch metallica into the U2, Aerosmith legendary category, to continue pumping out new music that's relevant for years. To me, PUMP with Janie's Got A Gun (Prolly my fav Aerosmith song) did that even though I didn't like much of their stuff after it, and Beautiful Day did that with U2. They left alot of other hard rock and 80's bands respectively behind. I guess it has to do with making new music for 2 generations. A friend of mine categorizes it as 5 great albums. I guess Metallica has that, although they were underground for most of that time.
I guess it isn't make or "break", more like elevate or continue on making newer music that maybe isn't running on all 4 cylinders.
Again, I think a huge key is Rick Rubin, and how much good stuff he's produced. I feel it.

I thought Metallica reached that category years, years and even more years ago?
Guns N' Roses reached it with the Use Your Illusion records and Metallica did it Black Album - at least according to the general public.
I'd say that they reached it way before that.

But say if Metallica and U2 did co-headline tour. Metallica would open. Metallica are on the second top tier. U2, Led Zep, Aerosmith, Rolling Stones are on the ultimate as high as you can get tier.

Pink Floyd is bigger than Aerosmith. U2 is the only recent band that compares with the likes of the Stones and Zeppelin as far as being all-timer headlining acts.

You don't reach that category in 'your own time'. Bands like Boston, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi etc. all achieved massive success on multiple albums, but would you put them in the league of Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin (in terms of popularity, not quality)?
No, you need to show consistency for that type of status. You have to come back after a few bad years and show that you still got it, that you have the ability to move not only one generation, but two.
Bands like Zeppelin and The Beatles are exceptions. Their material was simply too great for people to forget them. If Metallica and Axl can achieve another smash hit in the next few years you'll see them doing Stones type of tours in 5 years time.
Aerosmith is not in that league btw. In the US perhaps, but over here they're just another american band.
