Soundgarden are officially working on new material. Since February, the band has been talking about releasing a new album in 2016 and just last month Chris Cornell said that they’re “already working on new material” for it. Well, it looks like things are moving quickly right now. In a post on the band’s Facebook page, Soundgarden shared a photo of themselves in a studio setting with the concise phrase “working on new material this week.”

The photo shows Cornell seated with his guitar, and drummer Matt Cameron with a guitar in hand, as well. Check it out here:

This new disc will be included on the follow-up to the group’s latest album, 2012’s King Animal. At the beginning of 2015, guitarist Kim Thayil shared his thoughts on the expected vibe of their upcoming music. “We got caught up in the commercial world for a quick moment, but we’ve been there and done that,” said Thayil. “We didn’t necessarily want to be there, we’ve slowed down to a level that we are comfortable with … We don’t write radio hits, you can’t dance to our songs and that’s why we are Soundgarden.”

Fans of the band should be pleasantly surprised that Cornell has found time to work with his band this week, as the singer recently talked about balancing several projects at once. One such project is his solo album Higher Truth and that disc comes out on Sept. 18. Cornell hits the road in support of that effort on its release day in San Diego and he’ll tour through early November. Check out the full list of his tour dates here and you can pre-order Higher Truth now on iTunes.

We’ll keep you updated on any news about Soundgarden’s new album.

Best music news this year. I was expecting one more round of a release of tracks in the vault before a new album.Come to find out, they've already been working on new material. They're going to have a difficult time topping King Animal but I know they don't even look at it in those terms. I hope a few of the songs are unreleased, unheard songs like Summation and Ocean Fronts being rerecorded. Fans have wanted to hear these since Thayil mentioned them.

I'm glad they're already putting another album on the launch pad. They're getting older obviously and know their window is small. At this rate we might get two or three more SG albums before its all over.

You definitely need to listen to King Animal. It contains a few songs that IMO are among the best in their discography. By Crooked Steps, Taree, Non State Actor, Worse Dreams, Bones of Birds are epic.

Dave Grohl directed the video for By Crooked Steps.

awesome news. I too really liked King Animal - it happily resides in their legacy and comfortably holds its own. My only complete is that it is a wee but 'safe' and the proggier/weirder elements that I love have been pared back a bit. So i'm drooling at Thayils comments about new material. The more Ben Shephard writes, the higher probability a SG album has of kicking major ass

Chris Cornell to Work on New Soundgarden Material After Solo Tour

Chris Cornell is one of rock’s biggest figures and while the singer has kept himself busy over the decades, it can be easy to let the years pass by as other projects take shape. The singer released his fifth solo album this year, titled Higher Truth, and has been out on the road in support. Following the tour though, Cornell will return to work on a different musical project: the next Soundgarden album.
Speaking with the Advertiser, Cornell talked about his solo acoustic tour and Soundgarden, stating, “It’s great to be able to do the Soundgarden stuff and my solo career simultaneously. That’s what makes me lucky as a performer. As soon as this album cycle is over I’m working on Soundgarden songs for an album — I get to do a lot of different things and it feels like I get to have my cake and eat it too.”
Cornell confirmed a Soundgarden reunion on the first day of 2010, ending the 13-year breakup. The influential grunge band released their comeback album King Animal two years later, with the disc climbing to No. 5 on the Billboard 200 chart. The first single from the album was fittingly named “Been Away Too Long,” which was followed by two more new hits, “By Crooked Steps” and “Taree.”
It was revealed in September that the band were in the studio working on new material and a photo was even posted showing the band at work. Guitarist Kim Thayil also commented on the vibe of the upcoming album at the beginning of the year, stating, “We got caught up in the commercial world for a quick moment, but we’ve been there and done that. We didn’t necessarily want to be there, we’ve slowed down to a level that we are comfortable with … We don’t write radio hits, you can’t dance to our songs and that’s why we are Soundgarden.”
For those wondering, Cornell currently has dates booked into May 2016 in support of his Higher Truth album.

Looks like fall 2016 is when we'll get it.  I love the sense of urgency in this situation. They don't mention it but they definitely take seriously the fact that due to age they are in the last chapter of their career. Yes they could be like the Stones and keep going until they're 80 but the creative window at this level wont stay open that long.

Us fans have been spoiled since the reunion. Release after release after release.  Between now and next fall I wish they could fit something else in to tide us over.

2010:

Telephantasm

2011:

Live on I-5

2012:

Live to Rise
Classic Album Selection
King Animal

2014

Superunknown box set
Echo of Miles box set

Also various 10" vinyl releases on record store day.

I wish they'd unload those DOTU tracks recorded during the Superunknown sessions. Band said they didn't like them and since they didn't make it to the SU or Echo box sets, they're either saving them for that final unloading of the vault or we'll never hear them. I really want to hear how the song 'An Unkind' sounded in 94.

I also hope GNR are paying attention to this reunion. This is how you do it.

I saw Chris tonight in Sydney as part of the solo world tour, and he was awesome. Busted out Outshined on an acoustic, and that was killer!

Looking forward to new Soundgarden next year!

He does such interesting set lists on his solo tours. You mentioned a great example. This right here has to be the most bizarre choice for a cover.  He's doing the music for U2's song 'One' yet singing the lyrics for the Metallica song 'One'. It somehow works.

Here he is doing Sinead's Nothing Compares To You....
