Reason I feel Sorry was the best most commercial song is due to the relatability factor. Everyone has those in their life this could be about.

Prostitute, as it was, not a first single.

I remember when Rockband(?) came out some months before the album and it had Shackler's Revenge on it, they (probably Mysteron) said @ HTGTH that this song is going to be the first single.

Imagine... the first 'GN'R song' in 17 years...wouldn't have even reached the rock charts at all. If Better would have been a 'bit strange' from GN'R for a casual listener, what about that White Zombie mess?

True, I think CD was one of the songs that sounded like GNR of yesteryear.  Maybe easier for the public to consume and accept.  Add the fact that it was the title track of the "most highly anticipated album in history" it seemed to make sense to use it as the lead single.  BUT, it did appear that "Better" was meant to be pushed hard as a single, if not the lead single, with the Harley commercial, supposed music video, etc.  I wonder if the label got very little assistance from the band, management, and most importantly Axl, so they decided themselves which songs to release as singles and in which order.  Ultimately only CD and Better made the cut when it became obvious that Axl wasn't going to play along.

I know people like to play the "poor choice of a single" card, but honestly whatever song they chose was doomed to fail the way things were handled.  If they actually got out there and promoted the thing, then things may have been different.  But to sit here and slam CD as a bad lead single seems pointless to me.  You really have nothing to base that on since no single in history was released like it.  I'll agree it wasn't the best song on the album, but you'd have a hard time convincing me that it wouldn't have done better if things were handled and unfolded differently.  The curiosity factor was non-existant once the single hit the airwaves.

CD is a weird album in that way - doesn't really have any singles - but it's filled with great songs.

I thought the song CD was pretty mediocre since hearing it at RIR 3.. shit when i saw it was first single.

A great single changes things.

Again, they could've released Stairway To Heaven II as the lead single and it would have "failed" without any push from the band/label. It had nothing to do with the quality or lack thereof of Chinese Democracy, the song IMO.

When CD was the first single and you could stream it online with the count down clock, I sent the link to a heap of people. A number of them were saying the link wasn't working and they couldn't hear anything. What actually was happening is they were looking at the link, but the intro to the song was taking so long they ended up closing it because they didn't think it was working.

The main problem with the song is the intro, If they cut it down to less than a minute and a half or shorter than it would of worked as a single. I think it's a great song to listen to and starts up the album nicely. Loud and angry rock song with a good groove to it. I'm just hoping that future songs like The General whenever that gets released properly that the fans and the public don't fret about a long intro. From the song's intro being played at some of the past shows I thought it was a great orchestral piece.
