I listen to his albums and I certainly don't think he is undisputed by any stretch.

Slash def number 1. I can see arguments for Jimmy Page also.

In megadeth...Dave Mustaine is a riff lord - intricate riffs that he somehow carries off while singing, and his solos always add such angst and fire to his songs, the anger contrasts with the beautiful open playing of Marty Friedman and more recently Chris Broderick...it's shred but closer to Slash type sense of purpose about it in the song...but then thrash metal isn't for everyone.

To me there are 3 ways a person can be great..all valid...and some people have more than one:

1. Innovation.

Guys like Hendrix redefined how people play - by doing things in a then unusual manner.  Then EVH did it with tapping. Paul Gilbert did it for speed. Zakk made those high gain harmoics famous.

2. Technical Prowess

Some people can just play with Amazing hand coordination yet keep great feel. Guys like Buckethead and Bumble can play stuff that makes most players quit guitar. Joe Satriani can play any Hendrix song for sure...but I doubt Hendrix could have played his.

3. Composition, Emotion, Melody.

Sometimes the guitar can be used to add invaluable beauty to a song. Guys like Slash do this.

In any list of the greats you find that most truely famous guitarists have a few of these skills, or if they specialise in one, are at absolute top level at it.
