Re: Slash named the best guitarist of all time By Sweden's biggest newspap
1. Slash Guns N’ Roses/Slash’s Snakepit/Velvet Revolver/solo ★
That the humble star from one of the best boy-bands of all time, Guns N' Roses, lies on a certain podium is something I've known since me and my friend dressed out to Slash and Axl in Primary School twenty years ago. That Slash actually takes home the gold medal was soon clear when I started to figure on this list. What is it then that makes him number one? Short answer: The goosebumps-factor. The dist guitars melody king may not be the fastest, but he writes and plays solos that are superhits in themselves. You can probably sing along to as many of Slash's guitar solos as you can in Guns N' Roses choruses. The 25 years young "Appetite For Destruction" is a 53 minutes long example of an unfailing creativity with a hell of a melody-heart. The album doesn't have one single boring or unmotivated guitar tone. Every single touch ooze with sex and the "Sweet Child O' Mine"-solo is an indescribable climax. Poodle rockers, beer belly men, "svennebananer" (Side note: I have no idea what the hell that would be), indie people, grandmother, the neighbour, you and of course me in unison roll up our sleeves to give room for the goosebumps when our clearest brighting rock star show us his solo magic.
-Am I really number one? Wow... I don't think I have any comment. I'm mostly speechless.
But you must be celebrated as the best guitarist in the world all the time?
-No, not at all. I'm not even close to such a high position. It's almost embarrassing. I want to thank everyone that has had anything to do with this list. As uncomfortable as I am with it, it's really flattering.
Guns N' Roses was recently inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and you get touched by a list by a Swedish newspaper?
-It was different then, because it wasn't me that was inducted. I was part of a unit that produced a bunch of albums. This is more personal. Very cool - but it makes me nervous. Don't show this to my equals!
But you must be conscious about your influence as a musician?
-Eh, well, yeah, I can admit that there's many throughout the years that has told me that I influenced their playing. But in my world I practice and strive to get better. So far I haven't reached a level I am completely satisfied with. Especially not when I see who is closest to me on the list. All of them has influenced me a lot. Or, well, I don't even know who this this Chriss Olvia on number six is. But the others. I can't place myself higher on the totem-pole than Jimmy Page and Tony Iommi.
1. Slash
2. Jimmy Page
3. Tony Iommi
4. Brian May
5. Michael Schenker
6. Chriss Olvia
7. David Gilmour
8. Jimi Hendrix
9. Ritchie Blackmore
10. Randy Rhoads

None of these lists will please everyone. All of them are debatable. But it's good to see Slash on the top.

Above Brian May, Hendrix, Gilmour, and Page?! That's a load of crap! Slash is a great player and one of my favorites like the rest of you have mentioned but the other players mentioned blow him out of the water in terms of technique and quality in their playing. Just saying.

No, I think he's technically superior to all the four legends you mentioned. I also think that he's done more memorable stuff than May or Gilmour, and even Hendrix is up to debate.
But I wouldn't rate any guitarist higher than Jimmy Page, although Slash's my favourite player.

Seriously Slash's solos are iconic in a way that others' aren't. SCOM is likely the most popular solo ever and defiitely the most popular solo to ever hit mainstrem radio. At least I think so. I don't know who is the best guitar player ever but I can say this. Slash is the only guitar player who reels me in with his sterotypical "guitar god" style that all the "greatest guitar players ever" have. It's a massive part of why I love Guns N' Roses. My taste in music aside from Gn'R is so minimalistic. The Edge does more with less than anybody ever, Robert Smith's style is drug like in it's simplicity. That's the stuff I typically like but Slash si the one exception to the rule. Liek The Edge I'm not a fan of guys "wanking off" to overblown guitar solos that serve no purpose to the song other than to say "hey look at me I'm a guitar god" Slash is different though. Slash has "IT". I don't know how else to explain it.

It's because Slash's solos tell the story of the song the way some of the old blues players did.
It's like the lyrics give an account of the emotions in the song, then the guitar channels it too.
He's definitely one of the best of all time. It's not the technique itself it's the touch, you can hear when he plays from the choice of notes to the vibe, and there's no one else quite the same.

Slash is up there with all those guys. He deserves it. Zakk is a badass too. Angus Young.
