Re: Slash - Anastasia - Hammersmith Apollo - 06/06/12
Went to this gig. I know I'm not the biggest fan of Myles, but he put on a damn good show.
Re: Slash - Anastasia - Hammersmith Apollo - 06/06/12
Monkey, what Slash was a master at back in the day was letting his solos build and build to a climax. Like SCOM and Night Train and NR. He took you on a journey. Yes, he may have better chops now, but his note selection during SCOM is fucking perfect. The harmonic minor run he does during the solo is beyond words on the taste and flash used there. Anastasia is on par with those epic recordings. That said, SCOM to my ears is the most well written guitar solo Slash has ever done. This one is t far behind.
This is an awesome post. YES Slash's playing right now is amazing and the solo in Anastasia is pretty damn cool but like SG said the solos of the old Gn'R days were so incredible in the way they did build to a crescendo. Even some of the lesser appreciated ones like Don't Damn Me and Back Off Bitch. Those solos(like most AFD-Illusion solos) fit perfectly into the song and complimented the flow of the song. Most of the solos on Slash's new album to me are solos for the sake of a solo. Great solos, especially Anastasia but the difference is they aren't integral to the song. It's like they are seperate from the song itself. What's missing for me on Slash's new album as well as on CD to be honest is the solos don't compliment the songs to anywhere near the same extent althoguh ina weird way that the solos are just WAY better than the songs as as a whole. It's almost like as good as the solos are they take you out of the song and then when it's over you gotta readjust back into the song which isn't on the same level of the solo.

November Rain, listen closely to those solos, that is the definition of taste. Fucking perfect. Now I feel he would play more notes with less feel because he can, but that solo is a less is more solo. You Got No Right is a damn good solo that I think got lost in the Mix. Street Child by Elena Slash is vintage. Anastasia is pretty fucking close to vintage. Even the Don't Cry solo is freaking awesome. Civil War, all of them are so fucking good. I think he is about as good as his locomotive solo now.... Which is pretty good in itself, but not sure I have heard anything on RQ or SCOM level. There are really good solos, not sure about Iconic, sans Anastasia. Anastasia is on a higher level for sure, damn, its awesome. Slither was pretty good to for the song its on, and everyone is waiting for it.

RQ is a good example though Slash has created a new solo for it that he does on made in stoke and the NYC show and it's better than the original.
Re: Slash - Anastasia - Hammersmith Apollo - 06/06/12
well can i jst say, i think you guys are close to explaining the magic but not quite there:
the magic thing about Slash & his solo's are that he takes you to the crescendo/climax & then, when you think there's nowhere else to go he somehow dips his shoulder, turns a corner & takes it to a whole other level. i imagine it's like multiple orgasms.
& what's weird is how often he does & yet no other guitarist i know of does. & he seems to do it so brilliantly each time, there's no lack of quality - they're most all always "holy shit/fuck me" jawdropping amazing & laugh-out-loud brilliant, if not soul destroyingly gorgeous.
& nowhere is all this more true that on Nightrain, the greatest solo ever.
& it's here, on the studio version, where ironically enough he actually does run out of places to go & all that they can do to capture the beautiful death of it is to fade out, like the dying embers of the universe.
it's like the story will continue but we just dont have the power to capture or comprehend its awesomeness, but be damn glad you got what you got cause that's the best you'll ever have.
on topic - that anastasia is fucking fantastic.
when i saw him before i was only going to see some GnR songs & hopefully some Snakepit songs. now i WANT him to come back & play the new songs.
Re: Slash - Anastasia - Hammersmith Apollo - 06/06/12
I might have said this before, but I'm drunk: This is the best thing from any GNR member post-1993. Including GNR itself.
i don't know about this, only cause i dont want to deal in absolutes. but it's certainly up there.
& what i want to say is this: Slash should been brought back into the fold when Bucket left, &/or when Finck left.
this is worthy of the great GnR moments.

Great posts, guys. You know and understand music.
I've just heard the song for the first time. Mindblowing. The best rock song I've heard in years.

If Axl sang Myles' lyrics to Anastasia in Axl's vintage voice, we would be there. The lyrics are good enough. Great playing. Years ago we would have thought you would only be able to do this with Buckethead.

Dude, the bass player is awesome! Who is that cat?
now, being serious, Slash gets the fuck off from 5:00 on....holy smokes, he is wailing. That's a solid metal tune and light years better than that shitty single they released.
