Re: Apocalyptic Love FAN reviews
My theory on myles is that he can be a bit questionable on GNR tracks just cos those are so Axlish in aggressive style but he's killer on his own shit.
The ending part of far and way for example right at the end...it's full horns up!

Fuck me, far and away is simply gorgeous. And the unplugged version gibbo posted is killer, too

Smoking Guns wrote:This albums is so damn good to my ears. Far and Away may be the best "song" on the album. "anastasia" is still magical to me. I LOVE it! Nice review Axlin12!
Axlin's review was well-written and balanced, based on the few songs I've heard. (Damn, I've been still waiting for my Classic Rock copy! They were supposed to post it 2 weeks ago and still nothing... I contacted them and they'll check what happened with my pack. )
Back to Axlin's review... the only thing that surprised me was the low rating he gave to the album. Reading his post I expected better. Axlin was harsher than any professional critic I've read.
In fairness, when I said "hit and miss", I meant it. Remember i'm a vocals/melody guy first to my ears. So despite Slash's great solos, I judge an overall song in "is it good, will I remember this?"
And frankly the hit and miss thing came up. The songs that were hits, like Back From Cali & Starlight, I will never forget.
The songs that were misses dragged the overall rating completely down.
So think if you're in school and your teacher is grading you, and gives you 100 on a paper. Then suddenly you get a 0.
When your overall grade is shown to you, it's a 50% and still an F.
Granted there are NO "zero's" on this album at all.
But my ranking of certain songs are great, some are okay, some are very forgettable and weak.
My overall end feeling for the album was 'fair'. At first I was originally gonna give it a 2.5/5. But I felt that was too low. Then I thought, 3/5, but I felt that was too high. So I went with what I went with.
Yes, the way Axlin typed, I figured a 6.5-7. Then it gets a 5.5 out of 10. Crazy. This I damn good no bullshit rock album.
I think it's a "fairly good" rock album. I think your problem with the 2.75 rating (or 5.5 as you stated) is that it seems low. But it's pretty much where I feel.
I think your issue is that music critics OVER RATE the rating system on ALL albums. People are so used to psychologically, reading reviews that rank albums rarely any lower than 3/5, at the absolute lowest, that people don't get realistic judging on a rating.
No fuckin' way every rock album released is a 3.5-5/5. No fuckin' way. There's too much shit for that to be possible.
So in fairness, I wasn't slagging Slash. I was giving him a fair rating. Something you and others aren't used to. 2.75 is not a BAD rating. It just means I thought it was slightly better than average. Which is what I think it is, and many would agree. Some not.
To be honest, I would only give GN'R Lies a 3.5/5 if I were reviewing it again today.

Re: Apocalyptic Love FAN reviews
The album really features the evolution of the guitar styles he used in GNR, and while it lack's Axl's psychologically intense lyrics, the solos and riffs are far beyond what he's done before.
Overall the GNR songs are probably better as the Axl/Slash team was from another universe....but myles has really brought the game up a long way from Eric/Scot or Rod here.....and slash's parts on this album are better than what he did back in the day that's for sure...
And in terms of the post GNR catalogue...this smokes them....totally destroys VR even though that had some great songs....and given 2010 had some very strong music it's amazing he's landed this and toped it.
I've come to the conclusion.
This album is slash's best work to date.

Re: Apocalyptic Love FAN reviews
Finally got my Classic Rock edition... then realized that I need to buy a new RCA cabel.
Back from the store, I've listened it through for the first time. I will make a detailed post after 3 listens (in a few days), but I think it's a strong album with some great tracks and some fillers, too. Not AFD (but even AFD wasn't AFD for me for the first few listens), but sounds very good.
Re: Apocalyptic Love FAN reviews
Listened to it in the car today. General observations:
Slash and the band are tight musically.
Myles still bothers me, but he had a few moments on the album that were pretty good.
I think there were times that Slash tried to do too much on some of the songs...there was one song (don't remember which track) where it started off with clean arpeggios then went into a rock song. Screw the beginning, just play the rock song. I almost felt like he was trying to prove he was versitile and ended up overdoing some of the songs. Not saying he didn't play them well because he was strong throughout, but it seemed forced at times.
Maybe they will grow on me. Off to the casino!

Buzz, don't even fucking act like you don't know what song you are talking about. Nice troll, but Anastasia, the best damn song on the album is the only one you bitched about. Lol.

Nope, not that song. It was another one. I know (and like) Anastasia.

Re: Apocalyptic Love FAN reviews
Far and Away is also arpeggiated but remains that way through out the verses....the only one with clean arpeggios then kicking into hard rock is Anastasia....
