PEARL JAM Backs BARACK - Feb. 6, 2008
The Pulse of Radio reports that PEARL JAM members Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, Mike McCready and Matt Cameron have posted a song called "Rock Around Barack" at their official web site, PearlJam.com. The track supporting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is a reworking of the '50s classic "Rock Around The Clock". According to Billboard.com, Cameron also played drums on another Obama-centered song, "Fired Up and Ready to Go", which was performed by Seattle's Bergevin Brothers and the Total Experience Gospel Choir. No word on which candidate PEARL JAM singer Eddie Vedder prefers.
UK. newspaper the Guardian has published a breakdown of which musical acts are supporting which candidates in the 2008 presidential race. Also included among Obama's supporters are OK GO, THE GRATEFUL DEAD, Stevie Wonder, the GOO GOO DOLLS, Ne-Yo, Usher, FALL OUT BOY's Pete Wentz, Win Butler of the ARCADE FIRE and Dave Matthews. Obama's Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton, can boast of having Madonna, Carly Simon, Tony Bennett, Jon Bon Jovi, Melissa Etheridge, Janet Jackson, 50 Cent and Timbaland in her corner. Among the Republicans, John McCain can count on Burt Bacharach, Mike Huckabee has Ted Nugent behind him, Mitt Romney's got the Osmonds all sewed up and Ron Paul has won the heart and mind of former NIRVANA bassist Krist Novoselic. Some or most of the candidates were likely to face the end of their campaigns after this week's Super Tuesday (February 5) primaries.

Re: Political Influence of Music Stars
I personally cannot stand celebrity endorsements. I hate it when I watch someone on tv, or listen to someone on the radio and I have to hear about their opinions on who I should vote for. Chances are I'm watching / listening to them because they entertain me not because of who I'm voting for. I usually get very annoyed when I hear they start spewing talking points, then I tune out.
I remember when Stern got heavily involved in bashing Bush during the 04 elections. This is back when he still had his kickass message board up. Alot of people got pissed and the consensus was "if I want to hear politics I'll listen to Rush".
One a side note about the Stern board, one of the funniest things that happened on there was, someone once got Paris Hilton's cellphone number. Everyone started calling and recording the calls then posted them on the board.... good times.

^^ I agree, a few I don't mind. Usually when they are smaller nods or serve a good purpose. But when people like George Clooney or Tom Cruise (not that I mind him & his Scientology, everybody needs something & to each their own) get involved. Ugggghhhhhhh.

Re: Political Influence of Music Stars
We've seen it in france too, but i do not like public displays of politics from artists, as much as i don't like puiblic displays of faith either.
I think these issues are private and a celebrity has a lot of power to answer for, so bringing people into their beliefs can lead to tragedies, should they choose someone who reveals himself/herself to be dangerous for the nation.
People follow celebrities like shadows and mimick their liefestyles as much possible, especially youngsters, so manipulating people to vote for one candidate ( and it is manipulation) is something i personally find disgusting.
I think some people have too much time on their hands and i would prefer to see them ( or not see them) do charity work and give 1/25th of their annual salary for Children for instance.
Now is now, kids are tomorow.
Why are they helping people whose goals are all the same, whatever the party ?
Do they care about the people ?
They never did.
Will they ?
Never.
Why ?

As little faith as I have in the political system, I have much less faith in negativity. And no faith in apathy.
