Kuroda is the new Jon Lieber. Not saying he'll be injury-prone, but that seems to be the direction they're heading. A good solid, old-fashioned rotation with a solid 1-2 punch, then rounding it out with innings eaters. The days of the dream team rotation (Clemens, Pettitite, Mussina, Wells, Orlando Hernandez) are long over.

I HAVE NO CLUE, other than maybe money why Vlad Guerrero hasn't already been signed by the Red Sox. Papi's contact against lefties has eroded, and Vlad still has enough in his knees to play off-days in Fenway's left field. Alot of his pop is gone, but there's a little left, and he STILL consistently hits for average. Vlad could be a lefty situational DH, as well as an outfield alternate for the Sox.

Frankly he's flat out the best right-handed outfield option left on the market.

Maybe Vlad still wants a starting job?

Gio Gonzalez agrees to contract extension with Nationals
by Tom Singer / MLB.com

Gio Gonzalez, one of the most-sought pitchers on the trade market before being acquired by the Nationals in a six-player trade with Oakland on Dec. 23, has agreed to a contract extension that could keep the left-hander in Washington, D.C., through 2018.

Gonzalez's new deal runs through 2016 and includes options for the '17 and '18 seasons.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo announced the agreement, which covers the 26-year-old's arbitration-eligible years and, if both options are exercised, also his first four free-agent years.

Terms of the deal were not announced.

Gonzalez earned $420,000 in 2011, when he enjoyed his finest of four seasons with the A's, going 16-12 in 32 starts with a 3.12 ERA, earning All-Star status along the way.

In four big league seasons, all spent with the Athletics, Gonzalez is 38-32 with a 3.93 ERA in 95 games, of them 89 starts.

The Nationals acquired Gonzalez for a package of players including right-handers A.J. Cole and Brad Peacock, lefty Tom Milone and catcher Derek Norris.

Gonzalez's 31 wins in the last two seasons ranked fourth among Major Leagure southpaws, behind only CC Sabathia, Jon Lester and 2011 National League Cy Young Award winner Clayton Kershaw.

This is a great move by the Nationals.

I don't think anyone will look at the Nats as stupid for having done this if Gio flames out in Washington.

Just a smart move to lock up an ace like this. The Nats continue to get better and better. Now if they could just get a full season out of Strasberg...

I don't think there's any chance of Manny coming back to Boston.  They were ecstatic to rid themselves of him.  And I think Vlad's days of playing OF are over.  He's strictly a DH, and you're not paying David Ortiz 14 million to be a part time DH.  Also, David actually hit lefties very well last year, .328 with a .989 OPS.

Bartolo Colon, A's agree to one-year deal
by Janie McCauley / AP Baseball

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)—The Oakland Athletics and free agent right-hander Bartolo Colon have reached agreement on a one-year deal that will bolster the team’s depleted rotation, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said Sunday.

Colon’s contract is pending a physical, the person told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to make a formal announcement.

The 38-year-old Colon, a former A’s nemesis during his four-year stint with the AL West rival Angels from 2004-07, went 8-10 with a 4.00 ERA in 29 appearances and 26 starts last year for the New York Yankees in his 14th big league season. He won the 2005 AL Cy Young Award.

Last month, the A’s traded away starter Trevor Cahill to the Arizona Diamondbacks and All-Star lefty Gio Gonzalez to the Washington Nationals. Oakland also sent All-Star closer Andrew Bailey to the Boston Red Sox on Dec. 28.

When healthy, the hard-throwing Colon has been impressive in the Oakland Coliseum where he will now pitch regularly. He is 5-1 with a 2.14 ERA and an opposing batting average of .179 in seven appearances in the A’s aging ballpark.

Oakland general manager Billy Beane is in a rebuilding mode with hopes that Commissioner Bud Selig will rule the franchise can relocate some 40 miles south to San Jose and build a new ballpark. But the San Francisco Giants hold the territorial rights to technology-rich Silicon Valley. Selig said at last week’s owners meetings a resolution “is very much on the front burner.”

He appointed a committee in March 2009 to study the situation.

Colon will join a rotation featuring Brett Anderson, Brandon McCarthy and probably Guillermo Moscoso. Left-hander Dallas Braden, who pitched a perfect game on May 9, 2010, against Tampa Bay, is recovering from surgery on his pitching shoulder.

Braden received a $3.35 million, one-year contract in mid-December. He made three starts last season before being sidelined by a shoulder injury. He was 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA before going on the disabled list April 18. He had surgery to a repair a torn capsule in his left shoulder May 17.

The A’s haven’t been to the playoffs or posted a winning record since being swept by the Tigers in the 2006 AL championship series.

Yeah, David was rough against lefties the previous season but bounced back big time last year.  I was a little surprised they brought him back, but since nobody offered him a multi-year deal, I guess they were fine with overpaying him in the short term.  The guy can still hit obviously, but they've got Kevin Youkilis who has broken down the last 2 seasons.  He's much better suited to play 1B/DH at this point.  It's revisionist history, but they may have been better off re-signing Beltre last season with an eye towards making Youk the full time DH.  Easier said after the fact though, but their lineup is so left handed, an extra RH stick could certainly come in handy.

I think they brought him back for the familiarity and the "Papi" effect. David was very lucky to never wear himself thin in Boston with "Papi being Papi", unlike Manny.

Their buddy cop aspect, almost reminds me of Clemens/Pettitite. The mood soured for Roger, but there seems to be a softer respect for Andy, because of his apology and humble nature towards the game and the fans (Yankees for him, Red Sox for Ortiz).

If Boston falls out of it completely (hard to believe) by midseason, don't be shocked if Ortiz gets moved in the middle of the season. I really believe bats, particularly a short-supply of power hitting 1B (other than Pujols & Fielder) are gonna be in demand at the trade deadline. Boston won't trade Ortiz within the division (the Rays would probably have MAJOR interest if another division run happened).

If the Rangers don't sign Prince, they might try to snag Ortiz from Boston later on in the season. Detroit could be another option.

No matter how he performs, I believe this his is last season in a Red Sox uniform imo.

Brewers and OF Nyjer Morgan agree to one-year deal

Jan 16 (Reuters) - The Milwaukee Brewers and quirky outfielder Nyjer Morgan agreed to a one-year deal worth $2.35 million to avoid arbitration, the Major League Baseball (MLB) team said on Monday.

Morgan, a fan favourite who often talked through his alter-ego Tony Plush during post-game interviews, hit .304 with four homers, six triples and 37 runs batted in last season to help the Brewers to their first division championship since 1982.

His biggest hit of the season came during Game Five of the National League division series against the Arizona Diamondbacks when he hit a walk-off single that sent Milwaukee to the NL Championship Series.

Morgan broke into MLB in 2007 and has a .288 batting average, eight homers, 114 RBI and 105 stolen bases during a career spent with Pittsburgh, Washington and Milwaukee.

Red Sox add RHP's Vincente Padilla, Aaron Cook & Justin Germano
by Howard Ulman / AP Sports

BOSTON (AP)—A person with knowledge of the negotiations says the Boston Red Sox and right-hander Vicente Padilla have agreed to a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the club hadn’t formally announced the deal.

Padilla has a chance to compete for the fifth spot in Boston’s rotation. Other candidates for that job are right-handers Aaron Cook and Justin Germano. The Red Sox announced on Sunday via Twitter that they had agreed with Cook and Germano to minor league deals with invitations to major league spring training.

In another move, the Red Sox and left-hander Franklin Morales avoided arbitration by agreeing to an $850,00, one-year contract that is not guaranteed.

Padilla, 34, pitched in just nine games last season with the Los Angeles Dodgers, the last on May 13, before having season-ending surgery for a bulging disk in his neck.

The 13-year veteran has a 140-90 record and a 4.31 ERA with Arizona, Philadelphia, Texas and the Dodgers. He started 237 of his 330 games but pitched only in relief last year. He began the season on the disabled list while recovering from forearm surgery after going 6-5 in 2010 with a 4.07 ERA in 16 starts.

The Red Sox acquired Morales from the Rockies last May. He appeared in a career-high 50 games last season for Boston and Colorado, with a 3.69 ERA.

The 25-year-old Morales held opponents scoreless in 28 of 36 appearances with the Red Sox. He is 8-12 with 10 saves and a 4.61 ERA in his career.

Morales was among eight Red Sox players who filed for arbitration last Friday.
