SAN FRANCISCO '” EBay Inc. says it's changing its user-feedback system to keep buyers from leaving, but the plan has sellers worried they'll no longer be able to weed out untrustworthy shoppers.
Buyers and sellers have been able to rate each other at the online auctioneer since its birth in 1995, when eBay founder Pierre Omidyar envisioned a virtual marketplace built on trust among buyers and sellers. Come Feb. 20, a full spectrum of feedback is welcome from buyers about sellers, while sellers can no longer give buyers negative star ratings.

I know a lot of people are going to bitch about this, but I actually agree with this move. Back in December, I bid on these M.I.A. promotional Arular stickers. Made a high bid to guarantee I would win them. However, with all the other shit going on around the holidays, I forgot about this auction. Did the seller send me a friendly reminder email a day or two after the auction, and if I didn't respond, send another before taking action? Fuck no. He gave me negative feedback and an unpaid item strike  after the auction ended. Completely unfair as I would have paid easily if he had just reminded me about the damn thing. One you are given an unpaid item strike, you cannot respond to a seller's negative feedback.

Ebay sellers seem to think their shit don't stink, and its time for them to be brought back down to reality.

I also agree. I've been selling things on eBay for years. A lot of collectible stuff I pick up that just sits there, you know, autographed CDs and stuff, masks I've made for things. So there's two distinct eras here, the first one where I didn't really know the "rules" of eBay ie how not to get ripped off by the buyer (or other sellers for that matter), and when I came back after a long break and THOUGHT I knew how not to get ripped off. I won't get into any stories, I have a few, but let me say I also agree with this move. This past spring I went through a messy breakup with someone I'd been in a very long relationship with, and when she left I really cleaned house so to speak. So a lot of things wound up going on eBay, I made some nice money, but the thing is and you know this if you've ever sold on eBay, you used to really depend on that feedback. Without good feedback a lot of people wouldn't buy from you. So I sold a whole bunch of things, a custom Michael Myers mask and suit I had tailored, all these promo discs and posters and tour shirts, and I wound up with no feedback ... on any of it. Some coincidence or conspiracy against me, you be the judge, saw an entire month's worth of items receive no feedback, even though I'd already left the buyer feedback after receiving my payment (at least they paid, right?). I sent emails out after about a month asking very politely, "As a seller I depend on this feedback, please tell me if the items were satisfactory and reached you, I'd love to hear back ... something." Nothing. I'm sitting there looking like an ass dishing out positive feedback and getting this lopsided, like negated score for myself in return. So fuck all of them. Fuck eBay, too.

yeah I tend to find that there are quite a few people that buy off me that don't leave any feedback.

I also hate the way the system simply can't stop retalitory feedback.  I have come accross quite often sellers that simply refuse to leave feedback first.  Even though you paid for the item straight away etc, they wont leave it until you do.

I had an example with something I bought where they guy took more than 2 months to send the item.  During that time he is basiclly bullshiting etc, but all but threatened me that if I leave negative feedback he will do the same even though I paid immediately.

So from that side of things this will help if the seller can't simply retaliate because they didn't like you being honest.
