I can imagine Axl sitting with his shades and fedora on in the Universal Board Room with the deep drawling voice...

"I wanna put out a triple album with a unifying concept that links these to the UYI and CD albums.

I need to make three mini-movies for each of the albums to reflect my vision and about 9 high-end videos for the three singles lifted from each one.

There must be lots of arial shots, fire, dolphins, limos, crashing cars, hot models, me destroying pianos and stuff and HD live footage etc..."

The response is mostly silence peppered by a few coughs and the sound of leather squeaking as people squirm in their seats.

We live in a singles era like back in the 50s/60s except the technology is different and the public has a much shorter attention span. People don't need 14-15 song albums anymore. They want 1-3 killer tracks to put on their Ipods and shit like that.

Also great points on being more accessible to fans and the potential for your material to go viral.

nonsense.
the lp is still a valid, and perhaps more than ever, necessary tool for music artists.
i was thinking this the other nite @ a party & people were jumping to & fro changing the ip[ods & putting stuff on random when all that was really called for was someone to put on Exile On Main St & let it be.
obv that's a singular context, but albums still have their value & are capable of creating & telling a story as fine as any other medium - tv/film/books. (so do songs, but with the opportunities albums afford by their length it means people with something genuine to say have the space to do that.)

edit: now having said that, i believe nearly all GnR releases could benefit from having at least one track culled from them (AFD maybe coulda lost either or both anything goes/you're crazy - but defo NOT TAY whereas UYI & CD could stand to withdraw maybe two or 3 songs.)

& of course the two greatest albums ever, Funhouse & The Stooges only have 7 & 8 songs respectively..

True. Axl is too busy with X-Box, Cheerios, Cheetos, underwear, and a couch to bother going to a board meeting. 16

GNR actually did do some of that stuff, just not as effectively or as widespread as they could/should have.

Axl doing the online chats created pretty big and positive buzz.  If he did that more regularly, it'd be even better.  Ron is accessible to fans, DJ actually "hangs" out with fans in his Haunted Mansion.  And while it's pretty juvenile, he does answer questions there.

They shared SOME cool footage on their myspace and facebook pages.  Of course they could've shared A LOT more, especially with the lack of official releases we get, that would appease the fans somewhat.

And ESPN was playing tracks off of Chinese Democracy when it first came out.  They were played during SportsCenter and Monday Night Football.  The buzz WAS there.  The media was actually willing to accept and embrace the album.  Problem is, the band was nowhere to be found and once they failed to carry on with that momentum the game was over.

A smaller EP is a great idea, especially in this day and age.  Unfortunately though, Axl hasn't released an album less than 70 minutes in length since "Lies".  Not sure that's his style.  Which is the basis of what Lefsetz is getting at.  It's time for these "oldsters" to change their ways.

That's not that far off. And honestly... that's the reason Axl is totally disconnected from reality. We've said it before, but it just ain't 1991 anymore man.

You could make a very dark comedy along the lines of The Office about this.
The shitty lives of people in the record business trying to flog an outdated, dead format with pampered & out of touch and slightly mad rock stars breaking their balls about big and tiny things.

I'm sure some of you guys have the minerals to write the script...some of the comments I read here (take a bow Axlin) make me almost loose my coffee in the mornings...
