Re: House approves $70 billion more for war
i don't believe in taxing the wealthy more than the lower classes. i think it should be a flat tax for everyone. if you earn more, then good for you.
The wealthy have to be taxed to try and dig us out of this mess. Everyone has to be taxed, but the wealthy even more. Doesn't have to be permanent of course, but it has to be done. Spending also has to be cut. HUGE cuts.
The next president and congress are going to have to make some tough decisions that people aren't going to like. The survival of this country depends on it.

i dont know, I can't complain about my quality of life, and most of the people I know who live in this country seem to do all right. I think most of us are doing all right.
One thing I really wish they would focus more on is what the fuck are they going to do about gas prices?
Re: House approves $70 billion more for war
I think you're ignoring the core here. Bush, the current administration or the next is not the problem.
Bush didn't go to war, the military industrial complex did. Bush didn't ruin health care, the pharmasuits did. It's all very old, and it's always rooted in greed. 'New' leadership won't change any of this. It's simply not in their power to do it.
This is the Achilles' heel of democracy. The people don't know what's good for them or how to express it, the representatives are more concerned with pleasing their benefactors than the people, and if an extraordinary character is to ascend to the top spot he will either be destroyed through the corporate controlled media or simply taken out.
Sad to say, but the only thing that will change the current course is a dictator, or war. History can well attest to that.

I couldn't have put it better myself Polluxlm. The founders had a safeguard against this when the Constitution was written. Although at the time it was excluded, to white, male property owners, I think the rationale should still be applied today. Only those who own property and are employeed should be able to vote. This would prevent the elderly from preventing progress and the youth from imposing a bullshit Utopia.

Yeah, if that was enacted we never would've had a Reagan presidency and Carter would have done great things in 80-84.
Just because a certain demographic isn't voting how you would like them to doesn't mean they should be denied access to voting. Thats Bush logic, and its coming to an end.

Re: House approves $70 billion more for war
My point is only those who have a vested interest should have that kind of responsibility. I'm not saying they should vote a certain way; how they vote is entirely on them. But someone who doesn't pay taxes or contribute to the economy shouldn't have the same say as a forty year old with a wife and two kids.
People only focus on what is important to and affects thems. Unfortunately, what affects the working class is what is most important to the country and the world. Teenagers worried about lowering the drinking age and elderly scared of change aren't what's good for America. It is because of the lack of involvement that our country is on a downward spiral. This is the downside of a Democracy as polluxlm stated.
Would you prefer a dictator who only does things from his point of view? Cause unless we enact measures that force people to vote responsibly, things are only going to get worse.
Re: House approves $70 billion more for war
Sadly, every 4 years the same old BS comes up to attract single party voters.
Flag Burning
Gun Control
Abortion Rights
and the newest
Gay Marraige.
For the life of me I have NEVER heard Congress fight or pass bills relating to ANY of these issues (maybe gun control, but its' rare) but every 4 years they make it an issue. Just wait until the late summer/fall. This issues will be talked about heavily.

Taxes need to be cut for the middle class, regardless of our deficit, and probably increased for the wealthy for a while. They are the ones that really determine if a country is wealthy or poor. The system right now really pushes people up or down, more often down., and that's just not good.

I see where you're coming from, but what makes you think a working class guy with a family is more qualified to vote than anyone else?
The problem as I see it isn't vested interest, although that helps, but lack of knowledge. Your guy might be smarter in that he wants job security, steady economy, low taxes etc., contra lower drinking age etc. Still, in the vast majority of causes this mans needs can be exploited because he really doesn't understand the mechanisms of what he's voting for. Just because the President says he will do this or that doesn't really mean it will happen. For somebody who is more than averagely interested in politics and intelligent, this is often pretty obvious. The majority however don't. They vote for faces and emotions.
The Iraq war has so far cost each American 3000$ in inflation. Would people have condoned the war if they knew/understood this?
In my opinion the current system of democracy is obsolete. The masses are easily deceived, that's the way it's always been and probably always will be. This opens the society to exploitation by 'the strong'. The founding fathers knew this, which is why they set up a constitution and a bill of rights where the primary needs are protected. Sadly that wasn't enough. Today the constitution is not much more than a historical piece of paper. It gets violated everyday.
That shows how vulnerable we are when people are not knowledgeable and stop being vigilant. Imo this is a much more serious issue than any depression, war or health care.
