ok some of you may have seen the thread i made about the new bed frame i got from ikea...

well one of the part you buy are these bed slats. and they are like $50, so i mean $50 is $50 right and if i dont have to spend i i prefer not to. well the instructions werent that clear on if i need them or not so i emailed tech support

I recently purchased the NORESUND queen sized bed frame and was wondering if it is neccessary to use the Sultan Lade bed slats as well? I will be using a matress and boxspring for the frame and the box spring fits snuggly within the space between the side rails What is the purpose of the bed slats? is it purely for increased matress support? or is it part ofthe frame structure? the instructions that came with the frame seemed to give me the option of not using the bed slats so i was curious and your catalogue doesnt indicate that they are necessary, in fact it almost sugests that they are not necessary as it says that a boxspring is compatible with the frame...also the price you give for the frame online includes the head/footboards, side rails and middle rail but not the slats please let me know the purpose of the bed slats if i have a box spring and matress. thankyou

to which they replied

Thank you for your inquiry. After verification with our product specialist, we would suggest that you use the slats and your boxspring. The slats are part of the bed frame structure and are supposed to strengthen the bed frame. However it is still possible not to use the slats if you feel comfortable to try without them.

so what the fuck is that answer? they say use them but its not necessary, so what do you think i should do? i dont want the frame to twist either hmm i know this is kinda a stupid poll but just wanteed to see what everyone else would do in this situation 16

I used to work at Ikea (A very cool place to work I might add, employee friendly). Anyway, Almost everyone who bought a bed we sold the slats to as well. I don't know exactly, but I imagine it does strentghen and support the frame by more evenly distributing the weight. Imagine a cheap regular bed or cot with no springs on the metal frame. You could try it for a few days without the slats and see if it works, but it might be a good investment to buy them. It could add years to the frame.

I don't see how it could work without them?

What's under the mattress if you don't use the slats?  Wouldn't there be big gaping areas of nothing - that over time could make the mattress lumpy as it sinks down into those areas?

I thought the slats helped to evenly distribute the weight of the mattress and people more evenly and consequently make it stronger.

Although i have to say if it's a structural thing - why the fuck is it not automatically included when you buy the bed.  It's like selling a chair and then saying - do you wanna buy some legs to go with that?

no you have to buy the slats separately

and there are 2 side rails with horizontal legs about 3 inches wide that the boxspring can sit on and a middle rail for the middle of the bed

I've already bought the slats and have put the bed together without them and after a week everything is ok so far...just debating on whether to take them back and get my $50 back that i paid for them

I reckon you keep it.  If not I'm sure over time it will sagg on each persons side between the side rail and the middle rail - particularly if you give the bed a good workout from time to time and the weight on it is not evenly distributed during this time ;)

Use the slats.  I have an aunt who collects antiques and the "old time" beds all came with boxsprings and slats.  If you don't use the slats the problem is you eventually end up with a bow in the middle of the bed.  Might have a little more problem than that if you and Ms Neemo decide to (ahem) have an inspired night of "extracurricular activities".  without the slats the older bed's boxed springs could slide off the railing, I don't know how much improvements have been made but you can see the potential problem!
