Re: Why didn't the label support Chinese Democracy?
Yeah but Axl never has seemed like a "money" guy though so u have to wonder how happy he is that his 10 year in the making comeback got dropped the way it did by the label.
the label is basically a big bank and they definitely had the books closed on this album which is why u didn't get a video. Labels tend to fund these videos which cost money and they could've tried to sabotage axl to get out of the very lucrative contract Axl has.
U gotta remember, Guns N Roses have a HUGE recording contract based off Appetite,Lies and UYI
so in essence they are paying BIG time dollars to Axl in a time where records don't make as much money.
an act worth 15 million a record in 1990 doesn't make the same in 2009 to warrant that kind of deal
so I bet they are scheming with that.
Re: Why didn't the label support Chinese Democracy?
Buzz: the music wasn't any good.
Axlin 08: Slash wasn't on the record.
Madagas: I have no idea, but something tells me that they were simply over the saga and as soon as the ink dried on the Best Buy deal, they were DONE with anyhting to do with this one album. It was a windfall payday for them and cleaned the slates with the Gnr brand.
Actually I was going to say that the record company had already sunk $13+ million into the album, and by 2004 closed their wallet to Axl. I think it was pretty clear at that point, not a dime extra was coming from them, even with promotion. This is why the BB deal was done. They knew they were screwed, both UMG & Axl. Azoff was brought in to broker the deal, Axl took it UMG, and it cleared the debt, as you said.
Now for future albums... yes it's 'cause Slash is not on the record.
Re: Why didn't the label support Chinese Democracy?
I was joking dude...but, yes, cutting off funds in 2004 and the Greatest Hits lawsuit was the straw that broke the camel's back.
agreed, coupled with the fact that they had already spent way to much funding the record....and hell Axl wasnt willing to promo the album himself....like isaid in the other thread, you can't help those who dont help themselves....as a gnr fan i personally wanna say that while magazine articles and tv commercials are semi cool to see the first time, nothing would beat a face to face live interview with Axl, or a band spread in rolling stone or something...in the end what could UMG really have done to promo the album if "THE MAN" wasnt willing to get off his ass?

I would've loved to have been a fly on the wall for those negotiations with Best Buy. They had to have sold them a whole bunch of nonsense and promises that they just never followed through on. I can only imagine. I'm surprised there hasn't been a public outlash from BB to this point. Already we know that Best Buy asked for and was promised a video, which has never come. I bet that's just the tip of the iceberg. There's probably some serious lawsuits going on right now that we know nothing about.

I think they come off as idiots to the public if they made a complaint and their company is already in some financial trouble. I don't think the public knows how much they overpaid for Chinese Democracy. Neemo said it was like $10 a cd in another thread. They're also depending on Axl Rose which isn't a very smart strategy since he's extremely unreliable.
And lastly, like Russ said I'm not exactly crying for them since CC's demise their prices on their products have pretty much sucked.
Re: Why didn't the label support Chinese Democracy?
Like madagas said, the moment that Best Buy deal was signed, all parties involved washed their hands of this mess. Had no one sought ought an exclusive, we'd still be waiting for this album.
a music video wasn't ready.
Yeah, not unloading a video with the first single was a massive mistake. They were basically begging for it to fail.
Re: Why didn't the label support Chinese Democracy?
Remember when Axl was on Eddie Trunk and said they were in China for 3 months.......
Axl slipped and said something about filiming or taping then he caught himself...... Do u think they did a CD video or at least started on one?
