Re: The Current Line Up

I'll give you The Replacements, and I'm sure GnFnRAxl would too as he was making more of a blanket statement, but come on. SixxAM?! Get real. Nobody heard of them or cares about them. And while The Replacements were a great, well known band, no one cares that their bassist is in GnR. It's not a selling point. It's an "Oh I didn't know that".
SixxAM had a pretty successful debut album and "Life Is Beautiful" was quite a successful single. They were pretty well known in the modern rock circuit. I'm not saying they're a legendary band or anything, but to make it seem like nobody knows any of these guys or the groups they were previously in is incorrect.

Nobody heard of The Replacements? Nobody heard of SixxAM? I know the guys aren't household names, but you're making it seem like Axl went out on the streets and picked the first guys he saw.
Of course I had heard of the Replacements. Sixx AM? Seriously? Nope! And what I meant in my post is that nobody would've heard of Stinson, Fortus, Bumble, Brain or Frank, Dizzy, Pittman and DJ Ashba as a BAND. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be a huge act, and that they'd probably be an opening act known to some but still unknown to the majority. Just because I have heard of The Mats don't mean I'd know what Stinson would be up to. Man this guy was working selling ink cartridges before joining GNR. And if it weren't for Stinson being in GNR I wouldn't always know what Paul Westerberg is up to and I don't care. And don't ask me what the other remaining guys in the Mats are up to as I have no clue. In closing I'll give you a HUGE example of what I mean. Without looking it up on the net can you seriously tell me what Jason Newsted formerly of Metallica is up to now? I liked Newsted when he was in Metallica but seriously I have no clue what he's up to.
I'm not sure what your point is or why you're directing it at me. I never said I'd be a superfan of a new GNR lineup minus Axl. That doesn't mean I can't be interested to hear what they can do WITH Axl. You guys saying Axl recruited a bunch of hack replacements is way off base, that's all. They're respected musicians who've played in some pretty solid bands. I don't think it was his intent to build a "supergroup".

never heard of em. Wikipedia states the album reached 62. The current Top 200 lists Diana Krall as 62nd. Ever heard of her?
Re: The Current Line Up
I dont understand how someone can take a group of guys who have done nothing in GNR outside of Tommy, pit and say they are somehow better than guys who wrote Appetite,Lies and UYI
it is madness
i almost got banned at htgth for arguing this shit.
U can have Hendrix,Page and May in the same band, but they still have to WRITE shit

You've honestly never heard of SixxAM? I find that hard to believe. Even with the Nikki Sixx tie in. I'll admit I didn't know DJ Ashba was in SixxAM when they were hitting their stride but I certainly knew of Nikki and the song "Life Is Beautiful". Not sure how you missed out on that. Does Diana Krall have a song that hit #2 on the Hot Mainstream Rock chart? Cuz if she doesn't I don't see why I would know her or why I'd want to.

No one is or has said they're better, at least not here. Maybe you're referring to over at HTGTH. But as far as I can tell, people here (me included) are just stating that they're interested to see what the new lineup could come up with.
Re: The Current Line Up
SixxAM is ONLY known because it was Nikki's band. 99.9% of humanity couldn't even tell you Nikki was in the band, so how many do you think could tell you who DJ is?
This is getting WAY blown out of proportion. I have never said DJ Ashba was a household name. My point is he was a guitarist in a successful band, thus he is not a "hack". Regardless of whether people knew he was in SixxAM, now if he's introduced as "the former guitarist in SixxAM". People will know what you're talking about.
The thing about SixxAM too, is they did have some pretty nice achievements and that's with Nikki Sixx being the main focus of the band. Not to slight Nikki, and maybe I'm downplaying his talents, but if you told me Nikki Sixx was starting a band I could've cared less. But they ended up being pretty successful, so that has to either say a LOT more for Nikki then I thought, or a lot for the Michael and Ashba. I'm guessing it's a combination. They worked well together.

Re: The Current Line Up
But that's just it. I'm not trying to argue with you, but I could name just about any 3 (or 2) guitarists, and would I be interested? Probably. Curiously interested I suppose.
Yeah that's cool and I get what you mean, I mean we each have our dream line ups or approaches. I was going on for months that they should have hired doug aldrich from whitesnake before bumble came along.
I guess the difference also is whether or not a person wants the line up to contain other star power other than axl, as distinct from, other talent with Axl. You know like - do we want a previously famous guitarist to be in GNR, or just someone who can play like a deamon, and becomes famous once the world is exposed to him. There is benifits in both approaches....someone famous already prob helps to market it to fans upset at the loss of slash/bucket/brings new fans but then again someone new has potental to be just as exciting to me as I've learn't about a new player etc.
I think what i've been thinking in this thread though is that despite not knowing these guys upfront , once I got passed wishing they were the old band, I realised there's a pretty good amount of talent there.
I'd never heard of bumble, and at first i was skeptical, as bucket doesn't write the kind of parts anyone off the street can play. But then i heard how he'd been recomended by Satch...who's someone who knows his shit on guitar, and, over time, I checked out those youtube vids of bumble with the thimble showing off his techniques, and I realised, bumble may never be bucket - just as bucket was never slash to me - but in the same way - he's a person who might do something pretty interesting.
Same with DJ. I'd head of SixxAm cos of the motley book but that's about it. So when Axl appointed him i was like "who?". But since then i checked out some of his stuff on that line 6 commerical, and listened to some of other stuff and thought it sounded like he plays in an appropriate style, then i found out he co-wrote saints of LA which was an album i've really enjoyed (i didn't realise it wasn't just motley written previously) and so now I'm excited that he might bring some rock back, and a nice blend of modern-sounds but classic rock into the band....
Which isn't to say i'll like anyone Axl hires. I mean TBH because I like Axl's voice he could hire anyone and I'd give it a chance, but I wouldn't be excited about them like I am about this line up. A good example of that is Robin, I like what he played on CD in the end, but I never could handle what he did with the AFD tunes live for the most part. So it's not like I automaticly like anyone in GNR. But this line up does have the goods to get my attention. Not at first glance like it instantly would with Zakk or someone like that because I didn't know their resumes, but once I got into the playing of people like richard, i realised they can do stuff I can't
So i guess that's how it goes for me. I'd love some of the old line ups, particularly the first, not to have imploded, and I could make a shopping list of cool dudes i'd love to see audition for GNR, but at the same time, if I look past all that, this line up to me looks like it could be a ton of fun if the ball gets rolling on it.
I dont understand how someone can take a group of guys who have done nothing in GNR outside of Tommy, pit and say they are somehow better than guys who wrote Appetite,Lies and UYI
I would NEVER say that. I love the old line ups and their work. But my question is why does it have to be about which is better? Can't it be that they're both good in VERY DIFFERENT ways? Why in GNR fandom does liking one person mean they are against the other?
I also think looking at who is better kind of implies that there is a choice going on which doesn't really exist at the moment. It's been said that prior to bumble being on scene many representations were made to Bucket to return. He doesn't want to. Likewise, based on recent remarks, even if every guitarist in the world refused to work with Axl, I can't see him calling up Slash, seems he'd rather die first. Now obviously those things are regreatable, hell, they SUCK to us fans of the old line ups. But given that's the situation, we can have nothing, or we can have a new and different GNR, I'm interested in the different GNR. And once I let myself start to get passed the changes, it acutally became quite interesting to me what different things these people have to offer.
It's really like a second (or I guess third now!) marriage in my eyes. If you want the new wife to be the old one, then it's just outright never going to work and she can ONLY fail at that, because people are who they are. But if you look at it as a different relationship she can offer something new. Something right for that time. Who is better? Did you love wife 1 or 2 more at that time? They each did something amazing at that stage of things. So yeah...no one will ever be Slash and Izzy. Just like the second wife won't be the first. But I can still be happy. I think DJ and Bumble and Richard could make something i'll enjoy at this stage in my life. But your results may vary!
