Re: The Current Line Up
I know many are unhappy about the various departures over the years...and i'm not taking anything away from previous members cos they all kickass.....but I still think there is a ton of potential in what we have...some thoughts:
Richard Fortus: Ok. Now I know there were some kids around who felt it would be awesome to say fortus is god and blew what he did out of proportion. And there was a bit of a backlash to that, and that's probably fair enough. However, I've been looking around for stuff of his, and I've got to say, I think he's got a lot of ability in a really subtle way. I downloaded that James Bond theme he did for guitar hero or whatever it was. And the first time I listened I thought it was a cool track or whatever, but it wasn't like shreddy or anything that blew me away. But the more I listened to it, the more I noticed the nuances in the playing. The tones and sounds he's getting, the little details are all there. The type of vibrato, the pick sounds, the settings on the amp, the exact way the wah sounds. Maybe these are things I fixate on as a guitarist myself, but I think it's one of those things where he plays something simple at a basic level but puts a lot of finer stuff mixed in so that it's played very well. He's a classy player.
Bumble: I know some don't like him because he isn't bucket, but he has some pretty scary techniques going on. Having bumble in the line up is going to ensure that all kinds of guitar pirotechniques remain possible.
DJ: I don't know a lot of him yet, but I like what I've seen. He seems to be a good modern player, in that he takes elements of the classic rock sounds and honours those, but is also adept with modern equipment and sounds. I feel he he's the type of guy that can play with a nice bluesy feel too. I just have a good vibe about the dynamic he'll bring and I enjoyed his stuff with motley too.
Now these guys working together should make for a pretty good output in my opinion. Although writing doesn't seem to be on the agenda at the moment, I'd love to hear what could be done with this mix, I feel it could lead to a more straightforward rock album, but with enough 'out there' stuff to keep the guitars interesting. But in the meantime i'm really looking forward to hearing how they handle the chinese material, and the older stuff, if a tour gets going at some stage.
So yeah...call me a fanboy...but i've decided I'm officially into this line up now. Not that i don't still love slash/bucket. But there's enough potential here for a lot of cool shit IMO...
Re: The Current Line Up
I think it's a bunch of hacks. Axl & some other guys. GnR had the potential to be a true Supergroup, BH, guitarist from NIN, Bassist from The Replacements, Drummer from The Vandals or Primus, Guitarist from Psych Furs/Love Spit Love.
Now it's Axl, & all their replacements. BBF's a cool dude.

No denying that

We haven't seen or heard a peep from this lineup yet, fanboy I'll reserve my judgment for the time being, might be years before we see this lineup in action

Personally, I too think the lineup has a lot of potential but who knows what will come of it. Hopefully lots of good stuff, but if history has taught us anything, let's not get our hopes up too much.
Re: The Current Line Up
You gotta hand to it to Axl and the boys, as much as I bitch about the issues, and the fact it's Axl solo, they still remain and amazing live act, that blow anyone that comes on before them off the stage. It's still well done.
But with the new band, there are good points and bad points...
Axl: Probably one of the weakest points in the band. A great performer, who commands a stage like no other, but his voice can be has unpredictable as his behavior behind the scenes. His lack of commitment to GN'R, and half assed handling of business affairs have drove away a baseball team worth of former associates, and it continues today. A + F = C with this guy.
DJ: I actually don't care one way or the other with this guy, but in the sake of being positive, DJ could represent a step in the right direction. At least as good as Robin Finck, DJ's sound is a very modern rock sound, that could allow GN'R to finally make a step towards being among rock in the current, and not a novelty act with two members from it's heyday. Stage prescence... we'll see.
Ron: I think being in GN'R has brought out the absolute best in Ron. I don't care for his solo work (although i'm interested in this acoustic album). He's played Bucket parts well, but i'll always be out to lunch on him as a musician, until I see some original work with the band, other than adding rhythm to existing songs, or copying solos. He's certaintly no Buckethead in the least. As far as stage prescence, he's good. And dealing with the fans, he might be up there with Slash.
Richard: session musician, nothing more. Take from that what you want.
Tommy: probably one of the few new era members that I officially give the "Guns N' Roses Family" card to. This man put his time in. He's a Gunner, and is every bit as good as Duff.
Brain: drum machine. A good one, but his sound works better with Bucket. Not so much GN'R.
Frank: A good drummer, and i'm actually anxious to hear what he brings to some original studio material. He's got a groove like Adler, which could bring a sleazy vibe back to the rockers. This guy should get the full time job eventually, and even if they were to reunite the old, I wouldn't have a problem with him on drums, as to avoid drama or drug issues.
Dizzy: What can I say? Dizzy fucking Reed! He's great with fans, provides alot of work in the studio to the building of the songs instrumentally, a fan favorite, and cool, what else can I say. Maybe not a secret weapon, but i'm always interested in what Dizzy will bring. I'm still anxious to hear that first studio album from him.
Chris: along with Tommy, this guy gets the "Guns N' Roses Family" card. He's put the time in, and was a MAJOR contributor, probably as much as Axl to the construction of the album Chinese Democracy. His synth is forgotton and underrated. He IS the secret weapon, that nobody ever paid attention to. This guy should ALWAYS be around, even in the case of a reunion. He might seem to be the "huh?" guy over in the corner, but in the studio, he's a Gunner through and through.
Re: The Current Line Up
5 years ago I started a thread claiming Chris Pitman would be the MVP of GNR.
Nice to see I was correct
Richard: studio musician don't care either way
DJ can bring this band into a more current thing which could be good or bad. Love his stuff with Motley, but Motley ain't GNR u know?
Bumble: coolest GNR member since Slash as far as fans etc go but his solo on Catcher killed my favorite song........... still, gonna wait and see what kind of riffs he can write etc.
agree Tommy has earned his spot
Re: The Current Line Up
Not a huge fan of the current lineup, but as long as Tommy is involved, I'm in. Big plus if we can get Brain on skins for a tour. Axlin08, Brain has it all, groove-skill-everything. Go see him outside of Gnr, he throws down-funk, blues, metal, rock, ..complete badass. Adler is a complete clown compared to him...in every way.:/
ps I don't care what Izzy said about Adler 20 years ago. A fuckin' monkey could have played drums from 85-90 and there would be no difference.:peace:

If Axl wasn't in this band, would you care about them at all? Would you think they had "potential" or chemistry as a band?? No? Hmmm, so it must be Axl's songwriting which makes it all gel together, right?
I'm just being honest. I see nothing in this group of characters. They're all skilled in their own right, almost 3 shredders on guitar (personally I see that as a problem). Talented yes. A band I'm waiting to hear new material from? No. They'd have to prove it to me first by releasing something of their own first.
