No offence guys, but this place isn't exactly balanced either.

I don't hate Axl, I'm only very critical of him. He used to be my idol, so I'm really disappointed to see a 47-year old man acting like a 13-year old girl and takin no responsibility at all for the circus he runs. One other important thing to mention: I'm not paid to be critical.

Sorry Atari, I have a lot of respect for Axl but I'm not afraid to put the boot in if I think its merited, same goes for any public figure, friend or family member.
But the problem with Axl is the backlash started in earnest in 1992, and he certainly does get a raw deal a lot of the time, but he has absolutely brought about a hell of a lot of it himself. He was not popular waaaaaaaaaaay back, way before Slash left and way before his book.

It immaterial now, but I genuinally believe around the time of his reamergence at Las Vegas and RIR3 much of the world welcomed him back in open arms. People were excited, keen to hear new music and have a bonafied rock god back in the saddle.
Then began a series of aborted tours, some with major riots, and because of those failures, with no attempt to explain to people what went wrong, and I think the pendulum swung back swiftly toward the "Axl is an asshole" position.

Its not rocket science, forget spin doctoring, propaganda and passing the buck for events in yore.
Go out and perform music, release music, throw out some live dvds or cd, upload cool stuff onto the website - charm us, make us want to go to your shows, open up a little and show some good humour.
The online chats were very neat, and he came across as a fucking diamond for the most part.
Little gestures like that go a long way.

Give people positive things to talk about and leave all the negativity in the past.

Show me the posts that signify this "monstrous hate".

Amen.

Since the band is essentially NIN now, start doing NIN things. 16

I think a lot of the main stream public has had a love/hate with Axl for years.

He's an easy guy to throw stones at, press that want to be wankers can just go on about his kilt or his red hair or something, and because of the cancelled shows, and the wait for the album, new lineups...those looking to take him down get a fair bit of ammo to play with.

But that said...i think anyone fair pretty much knows he's an incrediably talented songwriter, and one of the best peformers of his generation. They mock...but on some level they're forced to respect him too.

Even those that mock do so because they need somethign to write about in the media...I think if Axl were to release some more music, and do a few more appearances in the media and stuff a lot of people would still welcome him back.

I actually have a theory: one thing GNR needs is a co-star to balance things out. I think slash used to take this role.

Like the media and axl don't seem to see things eye to eye, but slash is astute at talking to them on their level. Back when the Axl+Slash thing was solid...it gave a strong impression that they had each others backs, and despite the drama there was a plan, and the dramas just kind of added to the effect of following the band. Axl is said to be a wonderful guy in real life, but the media likes to make him come over as an asshole, and when he's able to play to that role, yet have someone smooth it over as well, it worked well. So axl will rant on stage, then slash goes on the talk show and smooths it over. I remember slash comming on our "today tonight" show here in 1993 - which is kinda like our 60 minutes and assuring Melbourne viewers that the 70,000 strong melbourne show was not going to end in a riot.

This forumla also worked for oasis where they had the asshole brother and the nice one.It helps if the co-star is also someone who's pretty talented, otherwise they just come over as an appoligist.

You guys may not get this...but I see Bumble as a potential for this role. Musically he has the chops, he wasn't recommended by Satrini for GNR because he's bad at guitar, he's got the kind of skills guitar mags are forced to respect. Meanwhile he always comes across as a really nice guy and down to earth. But he's kinda hampered by the lack of activity.

Line up changes are not helping. Even though the old line up lost izzy and stuff, the key players in the public view were Axl and Slash - and that survived both AFD and UYI. And adding so many players hasn't helped. The media are simple creatures. It's easier to write negative than figure out if the 'new slash' is bucket, ron, richard, fink or whatever.

What i'd like to see is Axl and Bumble sticking together for a bit, thus giving the media something to work with. You know like push them out there as a team the way Axl and Slash was pushed to us as a combination. If the tour happens it would be great, play a lot of the CD songs, then put out something simple, like a song or two, or an EP, just give everyone in the media some evidence that there are concerte facts to go with the drama. Old GNR had drama - but the albums were real, the peformances were amazing, and in interviews they talked as a gang. The problem with new GNR has been the loss of that balance, the element of flux is still there, but the solid things for people to focus on in a positive way have been few and far between. But when they come - things start to improve - in 2006 when Axl toured I thought a lot of articles were pretty positive about it - they mentioned the lack of an album and stuff - but there was positive buzz when Axl was around in NYC and stuff.

Market it as Axl+bumble, do some promo, a tour, maybe something special like a 1 song release online, some more promo. Let bumble take the hard questions, but keep Axl visable in the public eye at clubs, and in photos, take some photos of Axl and bumble together partying a lot. This is important. That soladiarity makes it look like bumble can be trusted as a person who knows axl. When slash would talk about axl in 1990 i would believe him cos he was clearly a friend/gang member and not an employee. Now while legally bumble may be an employee, this is also the case in othr bands but the public doesn't focus on it. Make it look like they're a team. If axl and bumble hang as crew a lot then no-one will care about the finance. let bumble take the heat. Let axl do what he does best, own the stage and sing, do a bit of a rant, let bumble do the in depths with the media....but give him the credibility of being a close friend of axl.
If that stuff were to happen i think new GNR would gain a ton of respect.

While some make a living bashing, I honestly think that a lot of people out there WANT axl back and gnr back. The problem is they arn't given what they need to play with in a media level.

Obviously Axl does what he wants, and doesn't work for me, but given they don't want a reunion, these are just my ideas on a way to actually get the new band over with public.
