I don't think that shit is near as lost on Axl as people think. He knows it's shit, but the more people involved the more diluted each role becomes, the more power he maintains over the overall project. There's a reason he's tried numerous times since 1991 to bring Izzy back. He wants 5 guys, and total domination over the finished product. Well you're not getting both, and apparently he prefers the latter.
I just wish he'd choose option 1. There's a reason bands like SG maintain their quality even after an extreme departure, because they never let ME get in the way of the final product. And when they did, you get Down and the band fucks off for 14 years afterwards. That's how they roll. 
GN'R would've maintained alot of that street cred had they fucked off forever around Fall 1991 when Izzy took off.
