True rockstars are original, different, and they certainly stand out for being original, not copying what people have done in the past.

Why is to wrong to put on a show and look great?

Funny thing with this stuff Nikki says. Maybe if people didn't look so hard to the old generation of rock stars for "help" or "inspiration" and actually did some digging in the present, they would find some cool stuff. It's the wrong approach. There's plenty of around, give them some well deserved attention instead of watching Kiss for the umpteenth time

People have always copied other people. It's a lost cause to try and make something out to be original. There's always a source of inspiration.

You mean like Lady GaGa basically ripping off Madonna's entire fuckin' act, including even having her music sound like virtual lifts of past Madonna songs?

Before you bag on Lambert, it's ALL been done before man. ALL OF IT. GaGa is this closest thing to a rockstar for this generation, I agree, but she's Madonna 2.0 Pop artists were cutting Michael Jackson-style songs before Michael Jackson.

Go back over the last 25 years or so of music, other than rap, everything else has been rip offs from the past, even some of the best music.

Like I said GaGa = Madonna, Lambert is trying to be Mercury solo, current modern rock hits/post-grunge is just melodic rock + grunge = current sound.

Grunge was so original, yet The Doors & The Stones were cutting drug songs YEARS ago. Country music was doing suicide songs YEARS ago. There's a reason the genre had such a impact on Jerry Cantrell.

Even Guns N' Roses was a complete and total manufacture of bands of the past. Like a mixture between The Stones, Zeppelin, Queen, Aerosmith, and AC/DC. Metallica themselves admitted they were just trying to do Sabbath & Priest, except faster and louder.

The Stones ripped off southern blues, which had been around for years.

The last original rockstar was probably Chuck fuckin' Berry.

It's all been done before man. Like you said, GaGa is probably the rockstar of this generation, because she seems to be gaining an Elvis-like following.

My point is, you don't have to be original, to be a rockstar. You just have to have that "it" factor, to quote American Idol (which has helped destroy the chance at finding a rockstar).

They just aren't out there, and if they are, they're either niche artists or dead.

Yeah originality is an interesthing thing...i mean as you can devolve everything to somethign that came before it - right back to the blues music that came with slavery in the united states and it's mixture with classical europan music concepts, which sort of gave birth the the whole of rock music.

But at the same time, each peformer while not original per say, do tend to refine the act or bring some unique twist of their own that makes them special compared to an actual copy cat. Also - as Axlin is saying - there's an elment of a next generation exploring the same concepts in different ways. For example - i often used to think a few years back that there's a lot of similarity between eminem and Axl. Very different musical styles - but in other ways...it's a similar thing. it's how life and music works I guess...almost nothing is entirely new...as humans don't really change much. Know what I mean - like in Ancient Egypt some dude cheated on his wife with some other guys wife - and right now someone is doing the same thing a few houses up from me most likely....so it's all patterns of the same stuff. But at the same time there's always new twists too.

I'm sure there are still a lot of great bands around. But I also think that our new model music industry - as much as it's trendy to hate on the labels - will not promote new huge bands very easily. I know these days it's all about empowering the artist and not the label and so on - but at the end of the day most kickass musicans do not have the business skills or the resources needed to push their music from one end of the planet to the other - much less making a living in an industry where their only income is going to be live shows. Works great if you are established. The labels used to pay for the 99% of things that fail with the 1% that succeeded...but that's not a luxuary real people can do.

So say you form a great band, do you want to take the risks involved personally to sell all you own to try that first international tour? Or do you go work in retail and have 2.5 kiddies. wink
