Re: New Soundgarden best of or new album?
Obviously go by a different name.
Why? The lineups you and Axlin08 listed are better than the current GNR lineup. Why would a stronger lineup not be deserving of using the name? Have our standards dropped that low?
Simply because I cannot imagine Thayil having anything to do with the GNR name.
And where as old GNR were a clasic rock band even in their heyday, ANY band with Kim Thayil is going to be alternative and underground sounding.
Which brings up another point I should have made Years ago.
Which I shall post in the main forum
Re: New Soundgarden best of or new album?
Having said that, I agree about Finck fitting better than Izzy(yeah I know, BLASPHEMY!). Kim and Izzy's styles are exact opposites and Thayil could somewhat "mold" Finck into what he is doing. Izzy is Izzy and while a powerhouse, I cant imagine those two getting much off the ground.
The way I imagine it, is something similar to UYI. Izzy's songs are Izzy's songs, just like Slash's songs are Slash's songs. Thayil would write stuff, Izzy would write stuff, and most would be driven by their respective writers.
Thayil would give it the sound it needs, while Izzy would give CD more quality song writing and more backbone, and both of them give it more rock legitimacy.
I do hear what both of you are saying in the differences. Kim is a more grunge, more alternative guitarist, Izzy is a throwback, Stones-ey guitarist. I don't see why it couldn't work though. I kind of like the idea of an alternative meets blues rock type of vibe. I'm think Guns N' Roses tracks like Alice In Chains mixture. Kim brings the whole Soundgarden background, with Room A Thousand Years Wide riffs, while Izzy brings bluesier stuff like a Jerry Cantrell would, and it molds into that alternative rock sound. I don't see why it couldn't work.
Keeping that bluesy underground also would keep the band with a more original Guns flavor, something that was completely abandoned with CD and the new band.
