Re: SLASH Says New VELVET REVOLVER Material Is ‘A Lot Heavier’
monkeychow wrote:I'm not sure why Axlin08 has such belief in no new VR album. To me it's the logical thing for slash to do at the conclusion of his solo album cycle. Like we're looking at another year of tour and promo. But then what, he could record a new solo album and do it all again (which I'd love) or he could return to VR because they have a bunch of shit ready to go....
Because I think Slash will get more mileage out of his solo career at this point. Matt's a session drummer. Scott is gone. Duff is gone imo (why would he leave Jane's Addiction for Velvet fucking Revolver? Guns N' Roses yes, VR no). Dave's blink and you'll miss him, and that brand name is a dead duck.
Time to move on. VR is dead. I just think any "third" VR album would be in spirit only, and most likely it would be a revamped band, and ultimately a name change, and not be VR. Slash himself said those albums were too mainstream.
The only way I see this happening, is if Slash sits on those unreleased songs, works up some new ones, brings Izzy in or some shit, really works the hell out of those tracks, makes them as ballsy, rock n' roll as he can, and releases a self-titled Velvet Revolver album in an effort to start fresh, hit the reset button on the band.
And that's just Slash. There's then the issue of finding a distributor who gives a shit.
There's alot of things that have to come into place for this to album, and it seems a bit too much for a forgotton, modest-success band. That's why I think it's more likely, on paper, that you'll get that fifth GN'R album, before a third VR album.
Still, it's just an opinion.
See back when Slash was making plans for his solo album I figured VR was way off in the distance and he'd make that his passion for the foreseeable future. BUT, I was also under the impression that his solo album would do a little bit better in the mainstream. Since it hasn't exactly been a smashing success, maybe that would change plans a bit. I think if the album debuted at #1, had multiple hit singles, etc. he wouldn't be giving VR a second thought.
With that being said though, the album has been received quite well by the average rock fan and the live shows seem to be going real well. But Myles has commitments to Alter Bridge, so I guess the next best option would be to reform with VR and decide where to go with that. But you're without a singer and Duff. And I'm with Axlin on this one. A lot of you seem to think Duff would drop everything and leave JA in the dust if Slash called. Why? Is there really a huge public outcry for a third VR album? Janes Addiction may not be what they once were, but neither is VR, especially without a singer.

If they can land Myles, and let him write his own lyrics in his style, fuck yes, there will be a demand. Nobody will say VR part 3, it may be called VR, but the excitement of a new singer will be huge vs. if they still had weiland.

Well I guess if it was me i'd leave Alter Bridge for VR but I could be totally wrong on that. But personally i'd rather be in essentially GNR as the new vocalist than esentially creed as the new vocalist but then i'm not myles
The real mystery is why in 2002 he declined to audition for VR, yet subsequently has recorded two tracks with Slash and is now fronting his band.
Maybe a change of heart?
As for duff. Well there's two factors. One is that duff is basicly in JA because he was a fan of the band, and for that reason I'm sure he'd step aside next time the original bassist wants to come back again. Also, it may just run it's course. After this album and tour, it will depend if they want to keep on or not I guess. Also, and this is more vague, but I just feel Duff was born to play with Slash. They know this on some level. That's why they made VR years after the fact out of the remains of the GNR powerhouse. They forget. But sooner or later Duff will play with slash again...and the heavens will open and all involved will remember that they have no business playing with other people....lol.

Another thought is that it could be compatiable.
I guess what we need is for Alterbridge, JA and Slash's album cycles to hit the lul point at the same moment.
I just figure slash needs to do stuff to stay off drugs. At the conclusion of this tour he'll prob take a break for a couple of months...but then what...either pen a new solo album or reband VR seems the obvious things to do.

That's the thing. I'm not saying Duff will never play with Slash again and VR is dead forever. Nor do I think Duff will be in Janes Addiction for the rest of his life. I do think Duff and Slash will join forces again, most likely with VR. I just don't see it happening in the timetable that Slash and Matt seem to be setting forth.

^^ This
And Smoking Guns, I know you love Slash & Myles, but you have to be crazy if you think Slash & Myles will create a demand for the album. Alter Bridge was not THAT successful.
If VR was dying with an iconic frontman like Scott Weiland, short of Slash calling W. Axl Rose, there's probably not anyone else he can pull out of his top hat that will get the nurse to find the crash cart.
CLEAR!

I think it would amongst the GNR fan base at least, many complaints about VR could be shortened to Scott's vocal range being no-where near axl, and his style of writing too grunge like (limited solos, limited/repedative lyrics).
Myles would bring a chance for borh of those issues to be resolved.
He's the sort of singer I think most fans wanted in the first place.

I don't think VR was dying.
Yes, they had a poor sophomore album in terms of charting, but that's not at all uncommon for bands, especially a band that had an initial strong curisosity factor.
However, they were still playing a lot of sucessful shows, and getting around the place doing stuff like that myspace show and getting a bit of media attention. It's also notable that if you watch any of those last shows the band chemestry (scott aside) is much improved from the first tours, Slash was back in form and the band really was sounding great.
The sole reason for problems IMO was that band dynamics broke down, there were the relapse issues for everyone during the writing phases, it was clear scott was taking a strong direction no one else liked (eg His "concept album" statement that Matt and Duff then denied) and then the subsequent drama with Scott missing shows and obvious tension on stage when he was there.
Bottom line is, scott brought in a whole lot of fans from the STP side of things, but he also minimised a lot of the positive responce from the GNR side of the fence, and who knows if it was his fault or not, but it seems most of the issues that lead to the colapse of the band centred around him.
I think with him gone, there's no reason they can't get a powerful singer, write songs closer to the GNR/Snakepit/Slash style which plays to their strengths and fanbase, and deliver a 3rd album that would be superior to both contraband and libertad.
Re: SLASH Says New VELVET REVOLVER Material Is ‘A Lot Heavier’
Interesting theory monkey chow.
I've wondered for awhile if the ultimate goal with Slash testing out more GN'R tracks, is to bring Myles in, do half-GN'R, half-VR, and basically just do Guns N' Roses sans Axl.
At this point, with Axl's attitude, I would think it'd be Slash's bread and butter bankable move.
