Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
but still he did alright by himself jumpin on that bandwagon...the exposure alone was enough to justify
and it wasnt til GH where they got any kind of budget for songs anyway...up til then it was all cover ..i even think that GHIII had a few of them
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Find me one other guitar player from the eighties who has done so well without his original iconic front man for 15 years. With no Guns N Roses name and no singing voice to communicate with, I think the fact that he is still so well respected and well known is a fucking triumph.
That's not really a fair assessment tho. Slash intentionally overexposed himself, in order to gain that notority. At this point, I think younger people just remember him as the guy with the top hat who plays guitar, rather than Guns N' Roses.
Nobody out there really attempted to do that, nor were really in a position to do that. In other words, Slash gains that credibility, only by default.
Lennon & McCartney were dual-frontmen for The Beatles, and obviously found the most success, while Harrison & Starr never saw that kind of post-Beatles success. May never had to leave Queen. Richards never had to leave The Stones, if anything Jagger was contemplating it in the 80's. Edge never had to leave U2. Eddie Van Halen IS Van Halen, considering the cycled out frontmen at this point. Page/Coverdale never even got close to Robert Plant's solo career, and so on and so on.
Slash's situation is VERY UNIQUE to him, considering the stature of Guns N' Roses at the time it dissolved.
Stack him against Eddie Van Halen, Steve Vai and CC DeVille and and any other 80's/90's guitar god and you get a fairer picture of the man. He's the last hero left.
The last guitar hero left? Well I agree with you, but these lameoid punk kids these days think that Radiohead is Pink Floyd, and Kurt Cobain was Paul McCartney. So you might have some debate on some people with the "last guitar hero" thingy. I think Kanye West also described himself as "The Led Zeppelin of my generation", so the line has become skewed to ALOT of people. Lady GaGa must be the new Elton John.
Stack Axl against Bono, Springsteen, and any other vocalist of his stature back in the day and sadly the man comes up short.
So does Slash. Slash was not the best of his era. Eddie was better, Vai was better, Bucket was better (started in the early 90's), Paul Gilbert was with Mr. Big which no one took seriously, and was better.
Slash only has that icon thing to go on. Which alot of fans think = talent. It doesn't. It's like me saying John Cena is a better wrestler, than some guy at the local high school, because Cena's face is splashed everywhere. There were better all-around baseball players, than Mark McGwire. You get the idea.
Axl wasn't even Springsteen, Bono or any other during his prime. But keep in mind, Springsteen had already been around for years, and despite Axl's great vocals, if anything he was the Steven Tyler of his era. But Freddie Mercury was better.
There's always someone out there - better.

Yeah he benefited out of GH much more than just the fee he got paid. How do you value the exosure he got from it, plus he was introduced to potentially a whole new generation of kids that may not have ever really knew much about him.
I thought this quote also from the CR Slash mag sums that point up well:
The by product of all of these sales has been the impact on the life of the man on the box. "I have a specific story that will sort of shine a big bright light on that fact, " says Slash. "A friend of mine who's a producer, he's got, I guess, a six-year-old little boy. I went over to their house, and I'd never met his little boy. I went over there, and the kid lost his mind. "You're the guy from Guitar Hero". He couldnt' get over it. A bit later on that night, he came over to me and went "Hey do you play real guitar too?". I try not to pay attention to all of that going on, but the biggest change in my day-to-day existence was the acknowledgement of kids under 10 years old."

Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Slash is the very last guitar God. The only other one from that era that is still active is Zakk Wylde. Those two still command a lot of respect. Jerry Cantrell and others are good, but aren't on the same level. There are a gazillion players better than Slash, but none of them wrote SCOM. Eddie Van Halen is a great player, but a major dick, even to his fans. And besides Van Halen, what other band could Eddie ever make it in? And since F.U.C.K, what had eddie done?

EVH is washed up, and is a prick and is a shell of his former self. You cannot say the same for Slash. EVH is more like Axl Rose than Slash.
Jeff Beck is the only guy that has progressed over the years.
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
Just because EVH may be a dick, that doesn't make him a lesser guitar player than Slash. It's all subjective, but I'd put Eddie on a level above Slash, pretty far above actually. He's in the upper echelon of guitarists as far as I'm concerned. Slash isn't quite at that level.

EVH is one of the greatest ever, but today, in 2010, he sux. He has decreased more from this prime than Slash has. EVH is one of the great ones for sure.

Since Use Your Illusion I & II, what has Slash done?
Oh, and Slash didn't write Running With The Devil or the Beat It solo either.
...and what did Paul McCartney post-Beatles, in 40 years? What did Jimmy Page do post-Zeppelin in 30 years? Slash, Axl, Izzy and Duff were the best together and they all know that. It's about chemistry. You just cannot replace elements of the perfect mix and expect the same explosure.
There are a billion better singers than Axl Rose, who is less trained (as a vocalist) than Slash (as a guitarist). But Axl Rose is the fuckin' legend, one of the all time greats, cause he has a genuine talent. So does Slash. They have roots to the very heart of the music - other people like Vai or Bumblefoot are very well-trained and skilled professionals. But they don't have those roots. jimi Hendrix was a shitty guitar player playing wise. Jimmy Page, too. You can find a trillion videos on youtube, where the unknown guy plays better than them. But they were gifted. They had the roots and that's what matters. Anyone can learn how to play fast or sing flawlessly - but they just cannot learn the miracle, the quintessense of music. That's why Slash is the last real guitar hero, and that's why Axl is probably the last singer god.
Re: Slash makes a small comment on Chinese Democracy
McCartney did have some legendary hits with Wings... Band On The Run & Live and Let Die immediately come to mind, which many people these days just assume are Beatles tracks. There's a couple Lennon songs like Imagine & Working Class Hero, that alot of people think are Beatles tracks today.
I only mention it, because Lennon/McCartney were one of the "success" story's of being solo artist post-a legendary band. Don Henley & Glenn Frey did alright after the Eagles too.
