I can either back an all original story, for a $20 million dollar film, that's gonna do $9 million at the BO "worldwide", or I can back Batman 6, which is gonna cost $100 million to make, and gross nearly $1 billion worldwide.

These franchise films are money in the bank. They've just given up on taking risks. The ideas are there, nobody wants the risk. They want guaranteed success. That's the whole reason independent film companies got started was to back films for the art and expression, not if it's gonna do great BO.
