I agree. I don't understand why Slash wanted it to be the first single. A below mediocre song.
Yeah, for some reason I don't totally buy the excuse given as to why this track wasn't used as the lead single. Especially after hearing it. Maybe it sounded like a good idea on paper, lead off with the Ozzy track. But when all was said and done and it was realized there were MANY better options, the switch was made.
Re: "Crucify the Dead"
Uggh, cliched Ozzy Osbourne at it's worst. Not a big fan of his. Too studio produced all the time.
This will probably be my last listen in on Amazon. I wanna hold out the rest for the album.
Funny, when I read worst yet, I was guessing it'd be the Adam Levine track. I was surprised when I saw it was Ozzy's, but yeah it's pretty awful. imo at least.
Re: "Crucify the Dead"
Slash's tone on this song is top-notch. I like the warm feeling of it. The slower parts of the song are the best, that's when this song really works. The chorus, though, is not that catchy, and the lyrics, my god, what cheese. Slash didn't do the lyrics, I know, but maybe he should have on this one.
Re: "Crucify the Dead"
Not bad, not great. Slash's guitar work is solid, and Ozzy does what Ozzy does best.
It really sounds like a B-side off an Ozzy album. But as cheesy as some people feel Ozzy is, I love the guy.... from 1991 back.
I haven't cared for anything Ozzy's done since No More Tears, and this also falls into the category of Ozzmosis, Down To Earth & Black Rain.
Just no energy, no spirit, no balls. And this is coming from someone who thinks Ozzy's finest hours were Bark At The Moon & Ultimate Sin.
Crucify The Dead is just limp like Ozzy's career has become. Not bad, not good, just kinda there.
P.S.
Slash's guitar work kind of reminds me of Bucket on "Sorry"
Re: "Crucify the Dead"
some times there is more to writing a song than soloing and adding vocals later. the best singer in the world can't preform if the song isn't built to properly accomodate the lyrics. not saying that ozzy was brilliant. i''ve said it before and i'll say it again - slash is a brilliant guitar player but he is not a song writer. he should do solo albums with him soloing and leave out the vocals.

Ultimate Sin gets a lot of shit from Ozzy fans, but I think it's a pretty damn good record. Killer of Giants, Thank God for the Bomb, and Shot in the Dark are classic Ozzy tunes.
He's washed up now and out of gas and don't really want to hear new Ozzy tunes under any circumstances.
